With a record 386,050 applicants, hundreds of thousands of runners from across the globe are now reevaluating their spring marathon plans having missed out on gaining one of the much sought-after spots, but fear not! There’s a world of options out there and here are just a few of them.
OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO
When? March 18
Where? Limassol, Cyprus
If an overseas race sounds appealing but you’re not keen on the hassle of planning it all, the Limassol Marathon is an ideal option.

Limassol is situated on the southern coast of Cyprus and is the island’s largest seaside resort. The marathon starts and finishes in the Molos area of Limassol, with the flat course stretching for 21km along Cyprus’ Mediterranean coastline. There’s also half-marathon, 10km, 5km and youth events to choose from.
Stirling Scottish Marathon

Where? Stirling, Scotland
For UK runners who would rather stay a bit closer to home, how about the Stirling Scottish Marathon? Launched last year, this Great Run Company-organised event returns in 2018 with a new and improved course designed to showcase the beautiful scenery and historic landmarks of central Scotland, starting and finishing in the city centre.
Runners will follow a scenic route past Blair Drummond Safari Park and through Doune, Dunblane and Bridge of Allan, where hundreds of spectators lined the route during the 2017 event, before making their way back into Stirling city centre via the University of Stirling.

This event in the English seaside resort town offers a course full of PB potential on a weekend which also features the BM10k plus Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens Mini Mile Races.

ABP Newport Wales Marathon
When? April 29
Where? Newport, Wales
This recently-launched event will take place for the first time next April as organisers look to offer another marathon alternative in the spring.
The route, which has been drawn up by two-time Olympic marathoner Steve Brace, will start and finish in the Newport Business Improvement District with the course – described as ‘flat and fast’ – taking in a number of iconic landmarks.
Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris

Where? Paris, France
If it’s a big city marathon you’re after, then why not swap the streets of London for the roads of Paris?
Each year around 57,000 runners head to the French capital to take on the route which passes the Champs-Elysées, the Bois de Vincennes and Boulogne, offering an impressive backdrop with spectacular scenes and landmarks along the way.
