There is also Beth Dobbin perhaps if she continues her progress. Maybe a stretch too far, but I wonder what KJT would turn in on the 100 these days. Quite a change in depth from a just a few years ago – a purple patch.

Carterhatch – I don’t think we have been in this position for a very long time, if ever, to have real competition for the relay 4 positions (men and women). I do think that Neita is not done yet and will push through.

  • JRF – I get your rationale. With the 400, we have enough evidence now to understand what it takes. Anything else is wishful thinking. We might get a crop of 51 + athletes (great for relay), but the next level takes one of the aspects you outlined (200 speed the most pertinent, I guess). I think of vastly talented athletes like Floria Gueï who…[Read more]

  • Treadwater – I agree – I would love to share Steve’s optimism, but with the 400 there are so many clues nowadays to success. If only we could find an athlete with Kathy Smallwood Cook’s stats from 100 to 400 (Dina anyone? 🙂 ).

Diamond has the 200 pedigree but does not seem to have the endurance, I feel. SBD again does not have the speed to get…[Read more]

  • I agree – SBD and Nielsen do not have the raw speed to make 50.x. Bruney, Agyepong and Pipi have potential in the future – if they can continue to make progress on their 200m trajectories, and convert that speed to 400. Pipi’s also still only learning – but a 52.07 indoors in March.

Biggut – absolutely agree with your perspective on the interconnection between sport and world events/affairs. Just as astounding for me is believing that £27 million is an obscene amount of money that should provide miracle performances or results. Anyone who thinks that, needs to get real. That sum of money is sadly a drop in the ocean today.

Justrunfast – I understand your comments, as I see them coming from an athlete’s perspective. Shame, the self appointed founding fathers of this forum seem to love a bit of cheap titillation – especially when egged on. But then again, quotes such as “…those of us who know the true value of Mo Farah will miss him on the track…” make a strong…[Read more]

I think the treacle comment is a bit off, too. I was impressed that Neita managed to distance herself from the German (who has a quicker PB). Toward the line, she maintained good form. With experience and good coaching, I expect her to come through as one of our stand-out sprinters. It was also not a 5 metre head start for Neita. Especially if you…[Read more]

  • On the Brendan Foster/Gabby Logan exchange, I think Logan et al were more guilty of muddying the communication by trivialising the quarantine protocol. Good on Brendan!

The concept of Langford in the 4X4 is intriguing! 😉 Back to the days of Juantarena.

  • Something is rotten in Denmark. Makhwala says he hasn’t even been tested for any ‘disease’!?

I think we have overlooked Talbot’s development. He’s been really impressing this season and started last impressing season. Not sure if Hughes would have the stamina for a 400 leg right now. Jimbo – why would you give him a go?

  • Yes, Holly’s mad reliance on her coach, who was equally as mad, was almost disturbing.

I’m with you Steve on KJT. But I have a glimmer of hope she won’t pull out of the HJ if her words in her latest interview are to be taken face value (the not-giving-up epiphany).

Mysterybrick – I really hope you’re right, I really do. But for once, I haven’t felt this pessimistic about our men’s 4 X 400 in a long time (and I am no spring chicken). Yes, MHS looked revived (or woken up) in the semi. Jack Green would probably run a solid leg. But Rooney’s tank looks empty, and Cowan will need some injection at this stage t…[Read more]

My feeling about throwing KJT into the 4 x 400 was simply caution to the wind, since we really have no hope this time around. I think people mistook your point about maybe KJT trying her hand at 400 bigger picture. But heptathletes/pentathletes have been drafted in in the past.

  • replied to the topic Relay Lineups in the forum Current events 1 year, 1 month ago

I would like to see KJT in the 4 X 400 – since I don’t see anything better that a 6th place right now. But of course her running won’t happen. Ahead will be US, Jamaica, Poland, Botswana, Nigeria.

Why do you say Dasaolu presumably won’t run (funding issue?/political issue?).

    I can only see an outside chance of the men’s 4 X 100 getting a medal…[Read more]
