Zurich Diamond League

Weltklasse will again be world class as 14 champions of the Rio Olympic Games are heading the illustrious entry lists for the first IAAF Diamond League final at in Zurich this Thursday (September 1).

A total of 16 Diamond Trophies, along with prize money of 40,000 USD each, will be awarded.

The new Olympic champions will line up against 26 Olympic medallists, 10 reigning world champions and 16 champions of the recent European Championships in Amsterdam.

Top fields for 5th Avenue Mile

Competitive fields including a number of British athletes have been assembled for the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile in New York on September 3.

The men’s field is headed by Olympic 1500m champion Matt Centrowitz, former Olympic 1500m silver medallist Leo Manzano and Olympic 800m bronze medallist Clayton Murphy, plus Britain’s Chris O’Hare and Jake Wightman.

The women’s race includes 1500m world leader and British record-holder Laura Muir, Olympic bronze medallist Jenny Simpson and Olympic steeplechase bronze medallist Emma Coburn, as well as Britain’s Eilish McColgan.

Stephenie Ann McPherson eyes 400m hurdles switch

The Jamaica Gleaner informs that 400m specialist Stephenie Ann McPherson is looking to switch events and compete in the 400m hurdles next season.

Currently she is the leader of the 400m race in the Diamond League series after finishing second on Saturday at the meeting in Paris.

Commenting on how her season has gone, she said: “It was not what I expected and maybe I will try the 400m hurdles next year, but I will have to wait and see what my coach, Stephen Francis, will do.”

Rio champions set for ISTAF

A number of Rio gold medallists are among the entries for the ISTAF (IAAF World Challenge) meeting in Berlin on September 3.

Caster Semenya will return to the place of her World Championships win in 2009 and will face in the 800m the Olympic silver medallist Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi.

Other olympic winners competing are home throwers Thomas Rohler and Christoph Harting, also Thiago Braz, Sara Kolak, Michelle Carter, David Rudisha and Tianna Bartoletta.

In discus also the former Olympic champion Robert Harting will compete.

Grunewald surgery a success

USA’s Gabe Grunewald said her surgery to remove a large cancerous tumour from her liver was successful.

“Surgery was successful. Let the recovery begin! Overwhelmed with love and support — ‘thank you’ is not enough,” she tweeted.

IAAF Race Walking Challenge

The IAAF Race Walking Challenge for the year ended at the Olympic Games. Results of walks at 11 meetings qualified.

In the men’s final standings Wang Zhen has 36 points over Jared Tallent’s 27 and Andres Chocho’s 26.

On the women’s side there is a tie between Mexican Maria Guadelupe Gonzalez and Chinese Qieyang Shijie. Third is Italian Eleonora Giorgi.
