Registered club members, coaches, volunteers and supporters can sign up for a priority purchase window to buy tickets for next year’s IAAF and IPC World Championships

Members of the ‘athletics family’ across the grassroots of the sport in the UK are to be given a priority ticketing opportunity to next year’s IAAF and IPC World Championships in London.

The ‘athletics family’ – comprising registered club members, coaches, volunteers and supporters – can register for a priority purchase window to buy tickets for the biggest sporting event to be staged at the former Olympic Stadium since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“It’s very telling that the first ticketing initiative is one that’s about the athletics family,” Sally Bolton, the managing director of London 2017, told Athletics Weekly.

“For us it’s very important that we focus on those that are involved in the sport and have been involved in the sport for a long time and that when we stage these two amazing events in 2017 that we make sure that the athletics family are very much part of making those events exceptional. So we’re very keen to enable what we call the athletics family to access tickets before everyone else.”

London 2017 organisers are encouraging people identified within the ‘athletics family’ to check their emails for communication from their home country governing body or British Athletics and follow the instructions for registering. They will then have until March 31, 2016, to register for this priority purchase window.

“I think anyone in the sport knows that there are hundreds of people out there volunteering their time to make the sport function and without those people we wouldn’t have the likes of Mo (Farah) and Jess (Ennis-Hill) performing at the level that they do,” said Bolton. “So it’s entirely appropriate that they can come along to the event and celebrate the success that they’ve generated by their hard work over a long period of time.

“We’re really keen to make sure that before anyone else in the wider public has the opportunity to buy tickets, they can select the tickets for the sessions they want to see.”

Further information on ticketing for London 2017 will be announced in April 2016, when timetables, pricing and key on-sale dates will be available.
