Euro winners for Weltklasse
A number of newly-crowned European champions have confirmed their participation at the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting on September 1, organisers inform.
Dafne Schippers will again face Amsterdam medallist Mujinga Kambundji, while two European champions Kariem Hussein (2014) and Yasmani Copello Escobar (2016) will clash in the 400m hurdles.
European indoor champion Selina Büchel will race outdoor title holder Nataliya Pryshchepa over 800m. Cindy Roleder (100m hurdles), Ivana Spanovic (long jump), Ruth Beitia (high jump), Ekaterini Stefanidi (pole vault), Sandra Perkovic (discus), Churandy Martina (100m), Martyn Rooney (400m), Angelica Cichocka (1500m) and Gesa-Felicitas Krause (steeplechase) are also set to appear at Letzigrund Stadium.
The Dutch 4x100m women relay team, new European champions themselves, will compete in the traditional Zurich Trophy, facing the Swiss quartet among others.
Weltklasse Zürich includes 19 events, 16 of which will represent the final leg of the Diamond Race.
Wlodarczyk 80.26m WL
At the Kamila Skolimowska Throwing Festival in Cetniewo, Poland, Anita Wlodarczyk came close to her hammer world record throw from last year with a world lead and third best result ever of 80.26m. Also Pawel Fajdek showed top shape with the third best throw of 2016 in the men’s hammer of 81.59m over Wojciech Nowicki’s 76.72m.
In the discus Piotr Malachowski got 67.16m ahead of Robert Urbanek’s 65.07m and Bartlomiej Stoj’s 63.81m.
Tomasz Majewski with 20.07m beat Michal Haratyk with 19.77m in the shot put. Konrad Bukowiecki, in preparation for the World U20 Champs, won 6kg with 22.61m. In the women’s javelin Maria Andrejczyk threw 61.12m.
Ibarguen for Herculis
World champion Caterine Ibarguen will be the top favourite of the women’s triple jump at the Herculis Diamond League meet on Friday.
She will face improved Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela, Olympic champion Olga Rypakova, Jamaican Kimberly Williams and top Europeans headed by European champion Patricia Mamona and European rankings leader Paraskevi Papahristou.
In the women’s javelin, Czech Barbora Spotakova will have a chance for revenge after Amsterdam against gold medalist Tatsiana Khaladovich. Overseas opposition will be Australian Kathryn Mitchell and South African Sunette Viljoen.
More stars for Athletissima
Organisers of the Athletissima Diamond League meeting have confirmed more stars for the August 25 event including fresh European champions. Ivana Spanovic will face world and Olympic champion Brittney Reese in the women’s long jump. European 100m champion Churandy Martina goes in the 200m against Ameer Webb.
Piotr Malachowski will be looking to repeat his victory from the 2014 edition of the Athletissima meeting, while 110m hurdles European champion Dimitri Bascou will line up against world silver medallist Hansle Parchment of Jamaica.
European bronze medallists from Amsterdam Mujinga Kambundji (100m), Lea Sprunger and Kariem Hussein (both 400m hurdles) are in the entry lists as well.
Organisers confirmed that Olympic and four-time world champion Valerie Adams will be the favourite in the women’s shot put, which she won in 2012 and 2014.
Rio 2016 stats
The statistics handbook for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is now available to access from the IAAF website as an online ebook and as a PDF download.
The 420-page book has been produced in collaboration with the Association of Track and Field Statisticians (ATFS) and edited by renowned athletics statistician Mark Butler.
The IAAF informs that athletics journalist Mark Ouma passed away on Sunday in Durban, South Africa, at the age of 55. From 1988 onwards, Ouma, who was born in Uganda but had Kenyan citizenship, worked as a freelance journalist and contributed to numerous publications in Africa, Europe and the USA. He was based in South Africa for many years, where he was a correspondent for Voice of America and a regular contributor to the IAAF website.
