Three titles were claimed on the first day of IAAF World U20 Championships action in Poland
Konrad Bukowiecki broke the world U20 shot put record on home soil on the first day of the IAAF World U20 Championships.
The 19-year-old threw the 6kg implement 23.34m in the third round of the competition in Bydgoszcz, Poland, to retain his title and better the previous record mark of 23.00m which had been set by New Zealand’s Jacko Gill in 2013.
Romania’s Andrei Toader threw a 22.30m PB for silver and USA’s Bronson Osborn 21.27m for bronze.
Kenya’s Rodgers Kwemoi was also in record-breaking form as he clocked 27:25.23 to claim the 10,000m title in a championship record.
Eritrea’s Aron Kifle secured silver in a 27:26.20 national U20 record, while Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo ran a PB of 27:26.68 for bronze.
The first gold of the championships had been claimed by China’s Ma Zhenxia as she took the 10,000m race walk title in a time of 45:18.45 ahead of Italy’s Noemi Stella, who clocked 45:23.85. Ethiopia’s Rio-bound Yehualeye Beletew got bronze in 45:33.69.
The British men’s team captain Josh Kerr was among the GB athletes to progress on day one as he finished third in his 1500m heat in 3:44.86 to qualify for the final. His team-mate Archie Davis finished 11th in his race, clocking 3:54.57.
Rechmial Miller (10.44) and Oliver Bromby (10.52) advanced to the 100m semi-finals, while Hannah Williams placed second in her 400m heat in 53.85 to progress and she will be joined in the semi-finals by Lily Beckford, who ran 54.70 to finish fifth in a faster heat.
Alex Farquharson and Patrick Sylla placed 16th and 18th in long jump qualifying with respective leaps of 7.41m and 7.36m, while Aimee Pratt placed ninth in her 3000m steeplechase heat in a time of 10:25.51.
Maxim Andraloits of Belarus leads the decathlon at the end of the first day of competition with 4205 points after results including a 10.97 100m, 7.20m long jump and 49.33 400m. Johannes Erm of Estonia is second with 4088 and Rik Taam of Netherland third with 4062.
