The Olympic and world heptathlon champion is to contest the javelin in her first competition since last summer’s World Championships in Beijing

Jessica Ennis-Hill is to start her summer season by competing at the Loughborough International Athletics (LIA) match on Sunday (May 22).

The Olympic and world heptathlon champion had been planning to compete at the Gotzis Hypo Meeting taking place from May 28-29 but was forced to withdraw through injury and will now open her Olympic season by contesting the javelin in Loughborough.

The 30-year-old used the Loughborough LEAP meeting as her final tune-up before Olympic glory in London four years ago. She also contested the javelin as well as the long jump at the Loughborough International in 2015 before the Toni Minichiello-coached athlete went on to claim her second world title in Beijing.

“I am going to start off my outdoor season with a javelin competition at the Loughborough International to put a marker down for us to work with,” said Ennis-Hill. “It is a firm favourite of both my coach and mine as the timing is always good, and the local support is amazing.”

The heptathlete competes as a guest at the annual competition in the Paula Radcliffe Stadium, which will see teams representing England, Scotland, Wales, Loughborough, GB & Northern Ireland Juniors and British Universities in action.

Joining Ennis-Hill in Loughborough is set to be European champion and sub-10 second man James Dasaolu, Dwain Chambers and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who will race the 100m.

“Loughborough has provided a fantastic environment for me to train in,” said Dasaolu. “It has been my home for a number of years and so it’s particularly nice to open my outdoor season here in an Olympic year.

“It promises to be a fantastic field as myself and the other GB athletes prepare for a big summer. Training has been going well for me and I am really looking forward to the meet.”

In the relays, European 400m gold and silver medallists Martyn Rooney and Matthew Hudson-Smith will be in action.
