USA Track & Field names a 36-strong team for the Edinburgh event in January

Garrett Heath is to lead the USA team at the Great Edinburgh International XCountry on January 7.

The defending champion, who has won the past three editions of the event in the Scottish capital, forms part of a 36-strong team announced by USA Track & Field for next month’s competition.

Athletes will compete across four races – the junior men’s 6km, the junior women’s 4km, senior men’s 8km and senior women’s 6km – with the overall winning team determined by the best aggregate finishing positions of the six best placed athletes in the senior category, as well as the four best placed athletes in the junior races.

The event will also see the return of the International Mixed Relay event which will see national teams of four (two men and two women) compete in a 4x1km challenge for the Stewart Cup.

Joining Heath on the senior men’s team will be Rio Olympians Hillary Bor and Leonard Korir, while their Rio team-mate Marielle Hall is among those on the senior women’s team along with Amy Val Alstine, who finished sixth overall in Edinburgh at the beginning of this year.

Kyle Merber, Will Leer, Heather Kampf and Lianne Farber will contest the 4x1km relay.

The Great Edinburgh International XCountry is free to spectate and will be shown live on BBC One from 13:15.
