World junior champion to race Jodie Williams, Asha Philip, Carmelita Jeter and Murielle Ahouré over 60m at February’s Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix
Dina Asher-Smith says she is “quite shocked but really happy ” with how the past year has gone as the sprinter looks ahead to 2015 which is to include the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix in February.
The 19-year-old, who won world junior 100m gold in 2014 and broke the UK junior records for both the 100m and 200m this summer, is among the latest athletes to have been confirmed for the Birmingham meet on February 21.
Asher-Smith will be joined in racing over 60m by European and Commonwealth 200m silver medallist Jodie Williams, three-time world gold medallist Carmelita Jeter of the USA, double world silver medallist Murielle Ahouré of Ivory Coast and Asha Philip, who was confirmed for the event alongside James Dasaolu earlier this month.
“I’m really looking forward to competing at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix,” commented Asher-Smith. “It’s a very knowledgeable crowd, they always know when there’s a good performance and recognise it so I’m really excited.”
The Blackheath & Bromley Harrier, whose 11.14 for 100m this summer puts her joint fourth on the UK all-time list, added: “I’m quite shocked but really happy with last year.
“I had a good indoor season, I became joint European junior 60m record holder and then got the British junior 200m record. Hopefully 2015 will be just as good.”
Williams, who won 200m silver at the Commonwealth Games before going on to secure silver over the same distance at the European Championships, said: “I love competing in front of big crowds on home soil and it will be great to be a part of this race.
“2014 was a fantastic year for me and I hope that I can run well at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix to set me up for another good outdoor season next summer.”
