A look ahead to the 11th Diamond League meeting of the year

Usain Bolt is the star attraction as the IAAF Diamond League series moves on to the 30th edition of the ‘Herculis’ meeting in Monaco on Friday (July 21).

Bolt will race the 100m in a meeting which traditionally features one of the strongest Diamond League line-ups of the year and top-class performances due to the usually ideal weather conditions and a fast track.

The Herculis EBS meeting is the final Diamond League meet before the IAAF World Championships London 2017, which is set to be Bolt’s final major championships. The last time Bolt ran 100m at the Louis II Stadium, in 2011, he won in 9.88, but this time the race follows treatment the Jamaican sprint star has required for a back problem.

Bolt lines up alongside athletes including Britain’s CJ Ujah and his fellow Jamaican Omar McLeod, the Olympic 110m hurdles champion.

South African stars Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya race in the 400m and 800m respectively, while Germany’s Johannes Vetter and Thomas Röhler, now second and third on the world all-time-list, go head-to-head in the javelin.

French pole vault world record-holder Renaud Lavillenie takes on Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil, plus Shawn Barber of Canada and Raphael Holzdeppe of Germany.

A strong women’s sprint hurdles field sees world record-holder Keni Harrison and fellow American Jasmin Stowers taking on Australian Sally Pearson, while Britain’s Eilidh Doyle is among those racing the non-Diamond League 400m hurdles.

Other British athletes in action include Laura Muir, Eilish McColgan and Steph Twell in the 3000m, Chris O’Hare in the 1500m, Morgan Lake in the high jump, Lynsey Sharp in the 800m and Dina Asher-Smith in the 200m as she looks to build on her 23.15 season opener in the half-lap event in Padova.

Olympic 3000m steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto faces fellow Kenyan Jairus Birech plus American Evan Jager, while the triple jump sees Rio Olympics one-two Caterine Ibarguen of Colombia and Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela resume their rivalry.
