A look ahead to Friday’s Herculis meeting, with Mo Farah, Caster Semenya and Dafne Schippers among those in action
After almost a month’s break due to events like the European Championships and US Olympic trials, the Diamond League series resumes in Monaco on Friday (July 15).
The Herculis meeting sees British athletes Mo Farah, Eilidh Doyle, Lynsey Sharp, Steph Twell, Robbie Grabarz and Chris Baker among those in action.
Farah races 1500m and has a great record at the venue, having set the UK record of 3:28.81 there in 2013, plus 3:28.93 last year.
Farah faces Asbel Kiprop, the Kenyan who holds the meeting record with 3:26.69, together with European gold medallist Filip Ingebrigsten and fellow Briton Charlie Grice.
Doyle races European champion Sara Peterson in the 400m hurdles, while Grabarz and Baker take on European champion Gianmarco Tamberi, Mutaz Essa Barshim, Derek Drouin and Bohdan Bondarenko in the high jump. Steph Twell and Rosie Clarke contest the 3000m and Holly Bradshaw goes in the pole vault.
In the 800m, Sharp is in a tough line-up that is led by South African Caster Semenya, while James Ellington takes on 200m and goes up against a field at the Stade Louis II also including Churandy Martina.
In one of the final big meetings before the Rio Olympics, Wayde Van Niekerk, the world 400m champion, tackles the one-lap event, while Piotr Malachowski, the world discus champion, also competes.
Dafne Schippers set a Diamond League 200m record in Stockholm last month and this time races in the 100m, the same distance she won the European title over last weekend in Amsterdam, with Desiree Henry also in action.
Schippers will have Christine Arron’s European record of 10.73 in her sights, plus the Diamond League record of 10.70 set by Carmelita Jeter in Eugene in 2011.
