International athletics news round-up with details of Bukowiecki’s 22.48m throw in Torun and Britain’s Jonathan Davies being voted European Athlete of the Month for December

Bukowiecki throws 22.48m WJR

Polish shot putter Konrad Bukowiecki opened his year with a great 22.48m in Torun with the 6kg implement. That means a world junior indoor record, which he achieved in the third round. Before that he had two fouls and after that throws of 22.12m, 22.13m and 22.16m were registered.

The previous top mark was also by Bukowiecki with 22.38m in 2015.

The outdoor world junior record is 23.00m by New Zealand’s Jacko Gill from 2013.

Also at the meet, Dominik Smosarski achieved a national youth indoor record at 200m of 21.89 and Przemyslaw Wascinski improved over 300m to 33.97.

More entries for Portland than Sopot

IAAF informs that the World Indoor Championships in Portland has 699 athletes (403 men and 296 women) from 154 countries as preliminary entries.

The last edition in Sopot had 539 athletes from 134 nations.

With that number of entries it would also be bigger than the previous two editions of the World Indoors in North America (Indianapolis 1987 and Toronto 1993).

Toth changes his mind

Slovak 50km race walk world champion Matej Toth confirmed during his training camp via Twitter that he is reconsidering his decision not to compete at IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in May.

After the event will not be staged in Russia but in Rome he confirmed he wants to participate at the 20km distance.

His only 50km of the year is planned for the Rio Olympic Games. Toth also plans for an indoor 5000m at the Slovak Indoor Walking Championships on January 31.

Australia names athletes for Rio

The Australian Olympic Committee has named its first athletes for the national team for the Rio Games.

Reigning world silver medallist Jared Tallent will head the 50km men’s walking team and will be joined by Beijing world 15th placer Chris Erickson and Brendon Reading.

World finalist in the women’s 5000m, Eloise Wellings, is selected for the 10,000m. David McNeill will perform in this event among the men, Athletics Australia informs.

Davies and Carton are athletes of the month

European under-23 cross country champions Jonathan Davies of Great Britain and Louise Carton from Belgium have been voted European Athletes of the Month for December following their success in Hyeres, France.

Athletes announced for Millrose Games

Reigning 100m world bronze medallist Andre De Grasse from Canada and Beijing worlds fourth placer in the women’s 10,000m, Molly Huddle, confirmed their participation at the 109th NYRR Millrose Games that will take place on February 20.

De Grasse will make his NYRR Millrose Games debut in the 60m, having a 6.60 PB from last winter.

“I’ve heard good things about the Millrose Games in the past so I want to see how I match up against some of these fast 60m runners. This will definitely be a great test for me,” said the 21-year-old Canadian from his new training residence in Arizona.

Huddle, who broke the area outdoor record at 5000m in 2014, can try to set a new USA indoor record in the 5000m at the event with a great field assembled.
