A look ahead to the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, the fifth meeting in the 2016 IAAF Diamond League series

Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth long jump champion Greg Rutherford opens his 2016 Diamond League campaign at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea meeting in Rome on Thursday (June 2), when he will hope to emulate the form from his only previous visit to the city’s Olympic Stadium.

Rutherford’s 8.32m leap at the Golden Gala from 2012 was his second best effort of his Olympic title-winning year, and the 29-year-old will be looking to continue his unbeaten run stretching back to July in his first competition on the continent this year.

Olympic bronze and world indoor silver medallist Robbie Grabarz and British indoor champion Chris Baker are other British athletes in Rome where they will mix it with the best in yet another world-class high jump field including world indoor champion Gianmarco Tamberi and 2013 world champion Bohdan Bondarenko.

Doha winner Eilidh Doyle in the 400m hurdles, Lynsey Sharp in the 800m, Sophie Kamlish, Maria Lyle and Laura Sugar in the 100m, Steph Twell in the 5000m, Desiree Henry and CJ Ujah in the 100m, Andy Pozzi in the 110m hurdles and Chris O’Hare in the 1500m are also among the British athletes in action.

USA’s Justin Gatlin races the 100m, while the 200m features world indoor 60m champion and world 100m bronze medallist from Beijing, Trayvon Bromell.

Ethiopia’s 5000m world champion Almaz Ayana has enjoyed a phenomenal start to the Olympic year with a world-leading 14:16.31 in Rabat – the fifth fastest ever – and will be among the hot favourites in Rome.

Germany’s Olympic champion Robert Harting is in discus action, while Barbora Spotakova and Katharina Molitor contest the javelin, while Valerie Adams competes in the shot put.
