Christian Coleman, Laura Muir and Andrew Pozzi are in action as the Diamond League heads to Hayward Field for the third stop in the series
The two-day Prefontaine Classic once again incorporates the Eugene Diamond League, with many top clashes on the cards on Friday and Saturday.
Kenya’s world 1500m top two Elijah Manangoi and Timothy Cheruiyot lead a strong field for the meeting’s finale, the Bowerman Mile. Djibouti’s two- time winner Ayanleh Souleiman joins them along with USA’s Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz and Norway’s 17-year-old Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who won the Payton Jordan 1500m in a 3:39.06 PB.
Last year’s 100m No.1 and world 60m record-holder Christian Coleman goes up against Britain’s recent Shanghai winner Reece Prescod, runner-up Su Bingtian and CJ Ujah in the non-Diamond League 100m. Coleman is also listed for the 200m but is no longer believed to be doubling up. The half-lap event features Britain’s Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, USA’s Noah Lyles, Botswana’s Isaac Makwala and Turkey’s world champion Ramil Guliyev.
The women’s field is stacked, with Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson, Dafne Schippers of Netherlands and recent Manchester 150m winner Marie-Josée Ta Lou joined by Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith.
Also fresh from their street athletics outings over 150m in Boston and Manchester respectively, Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Allyson Felix will race over 400m, while Olympic and world champion Caster Semenya and silver medallist Francine Niyonsaba are among the 800m entries.
British 1500m record-holder Laura Muir and Gold Coast Games 5000m medallist Laura Weightman are in 1500m action, while world champions Genzebe Dibaba and Hellen Obiri headline the 5000m field.
Britain’s Andrew Pozzi and USA’s world record-holder Aries Merritt go in the 110m hurdles after losing out on Great CityGames victory and USA’s Olympic and world champion Christian Taylor is back in the triple jump after racing 400m in Shanghai.
Britain’s Holly Bradshaw forms part of a top pole vault field also featuring Sandi Morris, Katerina Stefanidi, Alysha Newman, Jenn Suhr, Katie Nageotte, Robeilys Peinado, Anzhelika Sidorova and Eliza McCartney.
Mutaz Essa Barshim in the high jump, Conseslus Kipruto in the steeplechase and Tom Walsh in the shot put are among other athletes in action.
The Diamond League spotlight will be on the men’s javelin on Friday evening, as German trio Thomas Röhler, Johannes Vetter and Andreas Hofmann meet again after their historic 90 metre-plus performances in Doha.
Renaud Lavillenie, Sam Kendricks and Armand Duplantis contest the non-Diamond League pole vault, while Britain’s Kyle Langford races the 800m.
