The duo will lead the England athletics squad at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games

Tom Bosworth and Anyika Onuora have said they are “honoured” to have been selected as Team England athletics co-captains for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Bosworth, who will compete in the 20km walk, and Onuora, who will race the 400m and forms part of the 4x400m relay team, will lead the team of 92 in Australia when athletics action gets under way on April 8.

Both athletes have years of experience on international squads and have represented England at past Commonwealth Games. Bosworth was 11th in Delhi eight years ago, and since then has finished sixth at the Olympic Games, while Onuora will compete in her third Games, having won three Commonwealth medals so far – 4x100m silver in Melbourne in 2006, plus 4x100m and 4x400m bronze medals in Glasgow in 2014.

“I am delighted and honoured to be given this role as co-captain of the England athletics team for the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast,” said Onuora, pictured below, left, with the England 4x400m team in Glasgow.

“The 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne was my very first championships as a senior athlete and played an important role at the start of my career. This will be my third Commonwealth Games so I hope I can be a source of inspiration to all team members, especially the newcomers.”

Bosworth added: “I am incredibly proud to have the honour of co-captaining the Team England athletics squad at these Games.

“My first experience of the Commonwealth Games in 2010 was actually my first senior major Games or championships, so it was the start of my journey in the sport which has led to so many memories over the last eight years, representing my country at European, world and Olympic level.

“I’m truly honoured to have the privilege to represent each athlete and every athletic event on this team at this year’s Commonwealth Games.”

Team leader Martin Rush said: “In Anyika and Tom, we have two outstanding individuals to captain our team.

“Not only do they have a wealth of major championships experience to draw on, but their personal qualities and the respect that they command from their teammates mean that they will be able to lead by example and give great support.”
