Some of Britain’s athletics stars share their stand-out performances from the past year

From world records and gold medal-winning performances to personal bests and dreams being realised – here some of Britain’s top track and field stars share the athletics moments that have stood out to them the most in 2018.

British indoor long jump record-holder Lorraine Ugen

“The athletics moment of 2018 would have to be jumping over seven metres (7.05m) for me. Something I’ve been trying to do for years!”

European 1500m and Commonwealth 5000m medallist Laura Weightman

“My personal moment would be winning a bronze medal in both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships. A very challenging and long year to manage both championships so I was proud of what I achieved but that’s thanks to the team around me, in particular my coach, Steve Cram!

“It was great to do a lap of honour with the GB flag and be on the podium with Laura Muir in such an iconic stadium.”

European and Commonwealth 1500m bronze medallist Jake Wightman

“My athletics moment of 2018 was Eliud Kipchoge (pictured top) breaking the men’s marathon world record in Berlin.”

British pole vault record-holder and European bronze medallist Holly Bradshaw

“The European Championships in Berlin is my highlight. The championships as a whole was amazing, it was my first time at a European outdoors and I didn’t know what it would be like but it felt just like a Worlds or Olympics.

“In particular the highlights were myself winning my first senior outdoor medal (hopefully marking the start of a new chapter for me after so many injuries) and of course Mondo (Duplantis) jumping 6.05m, which was incredible to experience live.”

Commonwealth 20km race walk silver medallist and British record-holder Tom Bosworth

“My highlight for the year has to be the double world record day when we had a marathon world record followed by the decathlon record smashed later in the day! Had me buzzing over athletics in a way that I don’t think I’ve felt since London 2012!”

European 400m hurdles bronze medallist Meghan Beesley

“Being selected for team Europe. It was such a great honour to compete for my continent and such a surprise.”

British 200m champion Beth Dobbin

“For me it would be winning the British Championships as it was so unexpected and out of the blue and was a moment I never thought I would have.

“Outside my own performances I have also loved what Dina (Asher-Smith) has done this year and the times she has run over the 100m and 200m have also been highlights for me. It has been amazing to see her win so many awards as well off the back of that!”

European 100m and 4x100m champion Zharnel Hughes

“My athletic moment for 2018 was definitely winning the gold medal in the 100m at the Europeans Championships, Berlin. To see the hard work being paid off, the dreams I had winning the race becoming a reality, was all surreal.”

British marathon champion Lily Partridge

“My own moment would be coming down The Mall in the London Marathon and the standout moment by someone else this year would be Dina’s double at Euros.”

European and Commonwealth shot put finalist Sophie Mckinna

“My athletics moment has to be watching Valerie Adams win a Commonwealth silver in close proximity after having a baby, showing she was still so dominant and actually willing her to win because she is such a great athlete and person.”

European 5000m silver medallist Eilish McColgan

“The 2018 moment of the year for me, asides from winning my first ever outdoor medal, would be watching Gesa Krause of Germany win gold in Berlin. Her performances throughout the year weren’t great and she went into a home European Championships with so much pressure on her. They even changed the time of my 5000m on the final day of the event so that they could schedule in Gesa’s steeplechase as the final event of the day.

“All of Germany were watching and she came away with the gold. The stadium just erupted and it was pretty incredible to watch. It just goes to show that even if you’re having a pretty tough year, there’s always time to push your limits and get the best out of yourself when it truly matters most.”
