Olympic champion racks up a sensational 7013 points in Götzis, while Katarina Johnson-Thompson sets a PB for fourth and Damian Warner dominates decathlon

Nafissatou Thiam moved to third on the world all-time list with her superb performance in one of the greatest ever heptathlon competitions at the Hypo Meeting in Götzis.

Breaking the 7000-point barrier with her meeting record of 7013, the Belgian Olympic champion led a impressive podium which also saw Carolin Schäfer and Laura Ikauniece-Admidiņa surpass 6800 points.

Such was the standard of the contest, Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson finished fourth despite improving her PB to 6691.

After leading the event with her best-ever day-one score of 4059 points overnight, Johnson-Thompson continued by leaping 6.53m in her first attempt in the long jump – her best leap as part of a heptathlon since 2014. She fouled her next two jumps, however, while the opposite was the case for Schäfer, who kept her composure after two fouls to record 6.57m on her third and final attempt making it five PBs from five events by the German to move her into the lead.

Thiam soared out to 6.56m, while Ikauniece-Admidiņa recorded a PB of 6.64m for the second-best mark of the competition behind Claudia Salman’s 6.86m.

The next event catapulted Thiam into the lead. Throwing a national record 59.32m in the javelin, she gained 1041 points to put her ahead of Schäfer, Ikauniece-Admidiņa and Johnson-Thompson, who managed her best throw since 2014 but with a mark of  39.98m she dropped to fourth.

The positions remained the same after the 800m and with a time of 2:15.24 Thiam’s 7000-point-plus score was secured ahead of Schäfer’s 6836 PB and Ikauniece-Admidiņa’s Latvian record 6815, while Johnson-Thompson’s result was the best fourth-place score in history and higher than the tally achieved by Jessica Ennis-Hill when winning world gold in 2015.

“It was an amazing competition; it’s really unbelievable,” Thiam later told the IAAF. “I came here to see where my form is at this moment.

“I was a little bit scared as I felt a little elbow problem in the javelin, but I was able to relax after I threw 51.61m on my second attempt.”

In the decathlon, Damian Warner continued a performance which saw him lead from start to finish, scoring a world-leading 8591 points for his third Hypo Meeting win.

Eelco Sintnicolaas achieved a Dutch record of 8539 for second, while Germany’s Rico Freimuth scored 8365 for third.

Britain’s Ashley Bryant scored a 8163-point PB for a World Championships qualifying standard and the best score by a British decathlete since Dean Macey’s 8414 in Athens 13 years ago.

“I cannot explain how happy & relieved I am!” he wrote on Twitter. “London Qual & PB first competition of the year! Means so much & thank you everyone that’s helped!”
