New Great Peace Run & Walk launched in BelgiumFebruary 16, 2018
Entries are open for the inaugural event, taking place in 2018 which marks 100 years since the First World War ended
A new major international running and walking event, the Great Peace Run & Walk, will take place on Sunday May 6 in a year which marks the centenary of the end of World War I.
Commemorating those lost in the conflict, the event will take runners and walkers on a 10 or 21km journey through the beautiful region around Ypres, providing an opportunity to reflect on the horror that came to an end 100 years before.
The course of the unique run and walk experience will start at the Menin Gate, before continuing on through Flanders Fields, past iconic places such as Hill 60 and Hill 62, and ending in Ypres in front of the In Flanders Fields Museum.
“In addition to the many Belgian participants, we want to attract a lot of participants from the other side of the Channel together with our British organisation partner, The Great Run Company,” said Greg Broekmans of sports company Golazo. “In addition, a lot of French and Dutch people will find their way to this unique running event.”
The collaboration of Golazo with Great Run was announced last year, as they joined forces to grow a worldwide “Great Run” running community.
Paul Foster, Chief Executive of The Great Run Company said: “Following the announcement of our partnership with Golazo last year we’re really looking forward to seeing the first ‘Great Run’ branded event to be staged on the continent.
“The Great Peace Run is a fantastic concept. Ypres is a place that still holds a huge amount of cultural relevance in the UK and we’re sure many of our runners will be keen to take part.”
