Laura Muir eyes record-breaking 1000m ahead of European doubleFebruary 15, 2017
The Olympic finalist has the world 1000m best in her sights as she looks to continue her fine form in Birmingham
Laura Muir is looking to test her speed in Birmingham this weekend as she works towards next month’s European Indoor Championships in Belgrade and her aim of winning a first senior major medal or two.
Records have fallen each time the 23-year-old has taken to the track so far this year and Muir’s fine form could see her take down another at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday. Contesting the 1000m, the Scot will have her eye on Kelly Holmes’ British best of 2:32.55 set in 1997, as well as Maria Mutola’s world mark of 2:30.94.
“I’m really excited,” said Muir on having a world best as a target. “It’s not something I’ve really gone for before.
“It will be a great opportunity and I can’t believe that I’m at the standard that it can be a possibility. I’m really looking forward to the weekend and seeing what I can go out there and do.”
After twice improving the British 1500m record outdoors last year, Muir returned to the track in 2017 to break the British indoor 5000m record in Glasgow with 14:49.12 in January before smashing the European indoor 3000m record with 8:26.41 in Karlsruhe earlier this month to move to fifth on the world all-time list.
The recent AW cover star hopes to double up and contest both the 1500m and 3000m in Belgrade and, having only raced longer distances so far this year, Muir will be using Saturday’s 1000m as a key part of her preparations.
“It’s important that we get a bit of speed in before European Indoors so it is not too much of a shock to the system,” said the Dundee Hawkhill Harriers athlete.
“We did a more race pace session on Monday, which was a bit different. Going off Monday’s session, that bodes really well for the weekend. I will probably ease up a little bit over the next couple of days and have fresh legs for Saturday.”
With her season so far already including so many successes, Muir was understandably most pleased with her European record-breaking 3000m in Germany.
“I knew what the British record was but I hadn’t thought to look at the European one,” she said. “For it to come up ‘AR’, I was like ‘what’s that?’
“Running at the European Indoor Championships over 3000m and to be the fastest ever European in that event indoors, that’s pretty exciting and I’m really looking forward to running there.”
