British team trimmed from 109 to 82 after last weekend’s Olympic Trials
UKA last week announced a squad of 109 athletes for the European Championships, which starts on June 26 in Helsinki and for the first time ever will be held in the same year as the Olympic Games.
But track athletes who gained automatic selection for the Olympic team by finishing in the top two in their event at last weekend’s Aviva 2012 Trials and being in possession of the ‘A’ standard were automatically taken off the European Championships team so that they could focus on their participation for the Games, reducing the size of the team for the Europeans to 82.
Field athletes, however, and distance runners have been permitted to compete in both championships. Meanwhile, the European Championships will offer all other athletes the chance to prove their form in a last-ditch attempt at grabbing one of the remaining spots on the Olympic team.
After withdrawing from the 1500m final at the Olympic Trials, world 5000m champion Mo Farah confirmed that he will take his place on the European team as he bids to defend the 5000m title he won two years ago in Barcelona.
The team also includes genuine Olympic medal hopes such as Robbie Grabarz, Shara Proctor and Lawrence Okoye, while a small handful of athletes who have been battling with injury – such as Jeanette Kwakye, Jenny Meadows and Steph Twell – will be hoping that their European Championships appearance will mark a turning point ahead of the Games.

Mediocre team interspersed with the usual amount of mistakes by UKA and Van Commenee (UKA's greatest mistake). A couple of examples. Nathan Woodward was third at the Trials and, having the 'A' Standard, he should be selected for London. What will happen now? Rob Tobin wasn't added to the individual race: why? If some of the runners will obtain the 'A' Standard at the Europeans have they any chance to go to London?
To add the Europeans to the Olympic Year and so close to the Games was sheer idiocy, because now the EuroChamps are reduced to a Varsity competition. But to select the team as UKA did is pure folly.
Why is Lorraine Ugen not going to Helsinki for the long jump to get that 1 centimetre (she no-jumped close to 7m)?
disappointed that with some many qualifiers we haven't put out a bigger team – for example no Guy Learmonth in the 800m or any 100mh women – surely some of these athletes could have gained from the experience – even be inspired to make finals and possible medals esp as the entry list is looking v weak in most events
