New competitions form part of discussion at latest European Athletics Event & Competition Commission meeting
The potential introduction of two new competitions – a European Athletics Relay Festival and a European Trail Running Championships – formed part of discussions at the recent European Athletics Event & Competition Commission meeting in Lausanne.
With European Athletics council executive board member Toralf Nilsson as chair, the commission held its biannual meeting at the European Athletics Head Office from September 29 to October 1.
“The diverse areas and topics covered included discussion about the presentation and format of DNA (Dynamic New Athletics), which will make its debut at the 2019 European Games in Minsk,” read a European Athletics news release.
“There was also considerable debate concerning two new competitions which could potentially be introduced on to the European Athletics calendar: a European Athletics Relay Festival and a European Trail Running Championships.”
No further details about the two competitions have yet been announced but the commission will next meet in Lausanne from April 13-15, 2018.
European Athletics also stated that proposed format changes for the European Athletics Team Championships from 2021 were “explored and analysed”, while the competition format for the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships was “examined in detail”.
The commission also looked at how the women’s 50km race walk might be integrated into future European Athletics events.
