Time distortion and endurance hypnosis

Postby runningman » Thu Jun 15, 2006 11:30 am

Time distortion
I've been reading about professionals who use time distortion to increase endurance ( SportsHypnosis.co.uk ) in several types of event. Still a bit confused on how it works. Does anyone have first hand experience in this? Any views?

"More recently Athlete Iwan Thomas and Golfer Ian Woosnam were hypnotised by Robert Farago" Read this on the spoprts hypnosis page and wondered if this was a good advert.

I beleive it is when you run you send your self into a trance and you forget about the fatigue you are suffering. A bit like after many years of marriage you learn to go into a trance when you are being nagged by the lady of the house about some trivial household chore like decorating and it all washes over you.

Shopping with the wife recently for shoes and it felt like an eternity..boy could I have done with that tape..
Seriously though I think everyone gets the feeling of time slowing when you get an adrenalin rush, I nearly got knocked over at a junction whilst out riding. The last second before it got to me I manipulated the rear of the pedal bike which seemed like an eternity before it skimmed the bike's rear tyre (frame by frame waiting for the bang) even got my leg out of the stirrup something that doesnt normally happen so if you see a cyclist lying at the traffic lights still attached to the bike please say hello.

If this type of thought process can be harnessed then any technical speed event would be enhanced.

As a hypnotist myself i may be able to shed some light on the matter. The systematic breathing pattern you adopt when running in many ways sends you into an altered state anyway. I personally found adopting a set breathing pattern of 1 breath in and 2 breaths out helped considerably when i was training for a Half Marathon. In my experience many distance runners do this (and hence time distortion) naturally.

Sure you could use hypnosis to improve performance (and it works best for those who don't already have a natural subconcious strategy) but at the end of the day if you havn't done the training the people who have will still beat you.

As long as it's not used instead of proper training then there's probably no harm.

However..if you expect to break a good personal best in any distance event or any event in athletics without doing relevant and appropriate HARD work then you will be disappointed.

Hard work first, everything else (hypnotism e.t.c.) second.
