DL New York - 9th June 2012

Postby Flumpy » Sat Jun 09, 2012 10:30 am

After much searching I've found out that it's on the red button at 7.40pm this evening (Why does the BBC website make it so difficult to find??? :x )

On a more positive note that means no Colin :D

Having said that nearly all of the womn's field events are on before the broadcast starts so on't expect to see much of the wSP, wTJ, wJT or indeed the mDT.

I had no idea this was on today. There seems to have been loads of DL's on over the last coupl of weeks, not that I'm complaining

Ffrom the start lists a good smattering of Brits.
Okoye, Sayers, Bingham, Oni, Mason, Grabarz, Okoro, Simpson, Ohuruogu, Cox, Osagie.

There was mention in the preview of Rutherford, but he is not on the start list.

With good pacing, we might just see a 1.58 from Maz here. Bingham needs to step up if he wants some relay (at least) action in London

Always excited to see how all the 'Big Os' go too...

Incompetence by the BBC, since it also shows live coverage on another BBC site, 9.30 to 11.30 p.m
This is nonsense since it does not match the NY timescale of the Meeting after deducting the necessary hours .

This is the second time the BBC has cryptically done this by announcing some time last week on line that the meet was on BBC3 when elsewhere they stated Red Button. :(

to be frank... I find the BBC coverage of Athletics contemptuous... I stumbled on this weeks coverage on BBC3 thinking it was on the red button... only to suffer the inane and pointless filler offered by the presenters...

what other sport would BBC present with the action taking place over the shoulder of the talking heads - yes they apologise about not having control over the coverage - and I dont really have an issue with Jonathan Edwards (though as the anchor I still think he is not the finished article) but someone senior at the Beeb needs to offer training for Mr. Jackson if they must persist in having him as a commentator.

I also very bored of this Bolt-centric coverage - but that has more to do with our celebrity culture than the BBC's awful coverage.

In contrast, we get wall-to-wall golf, with not a talking head on the screen, Motor sport is not presented with shots of passing vehicles in the background as former participant-turned-celebrity yaps on adverbially or indeed the sacred cow of football, when did they plonk Motie on the pitchside as the match goes on live behind him (at least he can string a sentence together)

most amusing was Jonathan's efforts to grab passing athletes ...

Ditto.

I find the reliance on Bolt to carry the coverage both worrying and a little insulting. What happens when he's not there and they run out of things to talk about?!

The links/times to the meet was posted in the online section over a week ago. Although sometimes they are not accurate times they are the official IAAF feeds that we watch on the red button. When I see that the talking heads are on, I look over my shoulder to see the actual IAAF feed that Jonathon so often criticises as "out of their control".

On the official feed there is NO "countdown to Bolt" timer, NO vts of past days or interviews and NO let's grab an out of breath athlete to make us look important.

More action less chat leads to more people getting involved in our sport.

I couldn't agree more! I now save this link as a favourite as I can NEVER find their forthcoming red button/website athletics coverage anywhere on their site:.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tv_and_ ... 345480.stm

At least the Diamond League site is very "live" with its results, so the field events that start before the tv coverage, can be followed. That said, its a pity the IAAF results website (eg Kladno multi events today ) is its usually dire, deathly slow self

Flump and I had a bit of a run in with Steve Cram in Daegu last year when we dared to comment on the lamentable BBC coverage. Apparently it's not the BBC's fault, they have no control over the feed, everyone loves Colin etc

My main point has already been raised, saying they have no control is a total fallacy, the IAAF feed is showing something while we have BIll and Ben yapping and i simply don't believe that people would rather watch them two than real action.

Nobody but hardcore fans are watching anyway, no one else would have a clue it was on :x

(don't get me started the 'Countdown to Bolt' is not only dumb but plain rude

Agreed 100 %, mump.

The BBC coverage is ruined by the Edwards/Jackson horror. The point is that the BBC is run by a lot of self regarding know alls who as you said must know from audience reaction that most of the viewers are big fans of our sport. They cannot even get the timings right about tonights track and field, when on at least one BBC site it still says DL in NY is 9.30 to 11.30 p.m. when it wont be . Lord knows what is in store for us from August3rd to 11th.

Edwards, Jackson, and the Cliche man on field events. How will we all cope.?

At the Rome and Oslo DLs the obsession of the producer with Bolt was beyond puerile and lazy, and the only part solution is turning the sound down to nowt.

The total lack of understanding and endless dumbing down by the overpaid beaurocrats at the Beeb was never more perfectly
demonstated by the amatuerish crap served up at the Thames Pageant.

I've complained through the BBC's formal process a couple of times, obviously fruitlessly. Maybe someone should start a witty twitter/Facebook campaign, or something. Can the producer really be unaware of the extent of the negative reaction to their coverage?

When the Diamond League is on BBC Three the Beeb would save money and have vastly superior coverage if they limited the chat to a few moments before and after the action, and didn't bother sending the undynamic duo anywhere.

Agree, why do the BBC send Edwards and Jackson on these jolly boys outings when in fact the IAAF feed they do show on the Red Button/interweb actually does have an intro etc but does just show what is going on.....surely Edwards and jackson are getting paid mightly well for there waffle......cuts down on the costs of sending them BBC..and as for the obsession with Bolt...sort it out...The Olympics is more than 9.something seconds long...unless of course you add the prancing around before and after his races ....

btw has anyone seen the UKA e-newsletter with the caption comp for this month.....Lewis and Johnson sat with long faces.....I was going to enter the caption "Will Edwards and Jackson ever shut up...show us some athletics..." but as I already have tickets decided not to bother.....sorry but don't have a link to the picture!

That's a bad day at the office for Goldie isn't it?
As the fireworks, world leads, and huge continental records explode around her.
Hmmmm.
Wonder what held her back.

Crikey! Goldie's really up against it this year isn't she, even at her very best she's got at least 4 metres to find on Obergfoll, Abakumova & Spotakova and now Viljoen is knocking on the door of 70m too! Not to mention that her track record at champs (Beijing aside) leaves a lot to be desired

On red button at the moment and it says coverage on the red button for Athletics is delayed due to host broadcaster technical difficulties. Was due to start at 19:40. Wasn't it Eugene that had problems before. Can the US satellites not cope?!

Just blame Colin Jackson. All that technical stuff is much too complicated.

I have always been on the understanding that it was due to start at 2000.

Tyson Gay ran 10.00 in the B race

I was told by the BBC Red Button team a couple of hours ago, that the Red button would start at 7.40 p.m.. Its the 21st Century for Christs sake; no way would "technical difficulties" stand in the way of Soccer or some other BBC favourite. They dont care about Track, lets face it. To think they are the host Broadcaster for the Olympics

BBC coverage of the Diamond League is dreadful incompetence and I dont buy the idea of "its other peoples fault" Bet the IAAF are really impressed.

Nice comeback for gay. 10 flat into a 1.5 headwind is promising.
