There are compelling reasons to be convinced that anything beyond 6,750 is out of reach of all those currently 2nd to 8th - the LJ in many cases (except Fountain, whose LJ is superb), and the 800m in Fountain's case (also, in recent years her javelin has not been what it once was).

I still expect Chernova to be closer than anyone else to Jess.

Another statistical viewpoint - what if any of her rivals matched their PBs in each of the last three events? (Thankfully very unlikely in most cases.)

Chernova 6,924 (Anyone who does 6.82, 54.49 and 2:06.50 in one day deserves a medal!)
Fountain 6,747 (but her javelin PB is years old and she's not been close to it since)
Schwarzkopf 6,743
Skujyte 6,714 (but her PBs are 8, 5 and 8 years old, so this is unlikely)
Yosypenko 6,690

Schippers 6,476 (but she's improving all the time)
Savitskaya not a factor

Has Chernova had her last jump? If she finished on 6.54 then it's 14 and a bit metres. In other words she can have a Daegu level disaster and still have a decent lead. Looks like a solid (and better) Long Jump has indeed done the job.

Chernova is doing what some people have suggested could happen to her when the pressure is on... she's crumbling. (Which is a damn shame because she's a fine athlete)

(Although perhaps a mitigating circumstance for the russian might be that strapping around her right elbow... Perhaps an injury is preventing Chernova from throwing at her best.)

Pleased that Louise Hazel got a PB in the javelin after a near-PB in the shot yesterday. At least that's something to take away from a disappointing competition for her. Her running and jumping have been poor this year. Let's hope she can recover her form next year.

Great throw by Jess. I hope someone's up for a fast 800m, but Tyminska has pulled out, so hopefully Chernova will go for it to get the silver medal. Jess will need sub-2.06 for 7000 points and with the medal pretty much guaranteed, now is as good a time as any

Hope Austra hangs on for the silver as she is the only other athlete who really brought it, Cherny can dis lodge Yosypenko from the podium though.

I hope Skujtye medals, what are her and Yospenkos's PBs? Also, while I expect Jess to win, I wish people would stop hanging the medal around Jess' neck! She still has an event to go, and anything could happen. For all we know she could fall over or pull a muscle!
