I am ashamed to say that John Lane wasn't even on my radar - but find it gripping wathcing the results unfold to see if he will make at least the Olympic B standard - I haven't looked at his PBs, and wouldn't know where to start to predict the points ... but am I the only person getting excited!

And as for KJT - I really hope she gets the A standard!! She is the future...

Poor discus from Lane (37.71) seems to have put a dent in everything. 5m down on his PB. A pity.

Ashley Bryant throws a solid discus mark of 40.70 and lies 7th. john Lane throws 37.71, a little down on what he might have hoped for, and lies 5th. Lane should score a PB (tempting fate!) of around 7500 and Bryant could do likewise with a score approaching 7800. The Olympic 'B' standard is 7950.

Awaiting the women's long jump where KJT needs to be close to her best to stand a chance of the 'A' standard.

Any one know what happened to Kelly?

Lol... I am afraid I dont do twitter...but I am frantically trying to calculate what KJT needs to do in the last two events and how that compares to her PBs and the Olympic standards... and its hurting my head hahahah

From my calcs it looks like she'll have to throw over 41m then run the 800m in 2:14.0. Two pretty big PB's. So it's looking unlikely but she's definitely shown she's capable of getting the A standard in better conditions.

I agree that she looks to be off the qualifying standard. Still, she seems on for a new personal best and a good opening to the season. Maybe she'll try to get the standard at another multi-meet soon. Although it's not a very strong women's field at Desenzano this year, Thompson is giving a promising performance for a combined-eventer of her age.

Not sure about the maths but I think that she needs a 2.23 for the B and an impossible 2.08 for the A?

Katarina looks like she will go over 6000pts for the first time which is a good score in the conditions. There should be more to come with possibly two more chances to make the 'A' standard.

Ashley Bryant may end with around 7700pts, just short of his PB, and John Lane could add a couple of hundred to his best and go over 7500pts.

Well done to Katarina and over 6000pts for the first time. Good start to the season but it's clear her jumps let her down this weekend otherwise she would have sailed over the 'A' standard. Shame the conditions were not more favourable.

Does anyone know why Kelly didn't finish the 200m?

Ashley Bryant wins the javelin with 64.60 and moves into second oberall behind Karpov. Outside chance of a PB but possibly fall short. John Lane slips back with only 45m in the javelin. Interesting that Karpov threw the discus further than the javelin which just shows how difficult this event is for some.

Bryant ended up with 7689 and John Lane with 7399 which, I think, is a PB. Karpov won with 8172 meaning no one, male or female, scored the Olympic 'A' standard.

KJT also tweeted a picture of the track before the 800m - it looks very grim and wet.

Given the conditions and the fact that nobody, not even Karpov, got the A standard, I don't think she's let herself down at all. Busting J Ennis's record by 100 or so points is no mean feat. I wonder if she'll go for the heptathlon at the World Juniors?

6007 in grim conditions? I'd be happy with that! I think it's clear that the A standard is within reach for her in good conditions. To take Jess's Junior record is even better. Congrats KJT!

KELLY SOTHERTON HAS SCAN ON BACK INJURY

KELLY SOTHERTON had scans yesterday on a back injury that could force retirement and end her dream of saying farewell to athletics at the London Olympics.

Sotherton, 35, pulled out on the first day of her comeback heptathlon in Italy at the weekend with a recurrence of a back injury that threatened her career two years ago.

This, her first heptathlon in four years, ended in pain and tears. Sotherton still needs to reach the Olympic qualifying mark.

“Kelly Sotherton is having her injury assessed today now she’s back in Britain,” said UK Athletics.


“We’ll know more in the next day or so.”
