Looking forward to Adeoye's first 200m - great indoors and now a solid 400m; hopefully sub-23 this season...

I remember serious questions being asked a few years ago about why we have high performance centres but the athletes are all in America, Australia or other overseas locations. As I say, it was a serious issue but athletes will train and compete at the best venues possible and who wouldn't want to be in the Californian sunshine at this time of the year? Hopefully, there will be some good early season marks including those all important 'A' qualifiers.

About 30 I should say. I just trawled through the entries and it feels like half the team are there!

Some very interesting entries too. On the men's side:

400: Chris Clarke, Martyn Rooney
1500: Andy Baddeley, James Brewer, Adam Cotton
5000: Andy Vernon
400mH: Richard Davenport, David Hughes, Nathan Woodward
PV: Steven Lewis
LJ: Greg Rutherford
DT: Abdul Buhari, Brett Morse, Lawrence Okoye

And for the women:

400: Nicola Sanders
5000: Emily Pidgeon, Stevie Stockton
400mH: Meghan Beesley, Perri Shakes-Drayton
DT: Jade Nicholls
HT: Sophie Hitchon
JT: Goldie Sayers

Fingers crossed for some good early season marks.

That is an awful lot of air fares. Stevie Stockton picked up some kind of injury a couple of weeks ago and didn't go to America, according to Twitter.

Carl Myerscough is down to throw shot. A couple of 20m efforts will see him in London if the CAS decision goes his way. The discus is, obviously, more competitive so hedging his bets this year.

Germaine Mason is due to high jump in the Jamaica meet on Saturday. Will be interesting to see if he is any where near his best (2.25 would indicate this) but after so long out it seems about as likely as Ben Challinor making the London team. However, we may get a surprise!

discus has comm silver medallist gouder and myercoghee in and fazekas and the aussi wruck and some other good internationals, plus chris scott and zane - 30 oddd entrants, so it will be a top field. Im glad so manY brits are doing it - usually many of them watch because they are not good enough to enter.

Well, there are a lot more people out there. As said above, mostly the L'boro folks, quite a few of the throws squad - Zoe Derham, Mark Dry and Sarah Holt are in there too. I get the impression that a few squads are over there in April for warm-weather training.

This has been a regular occurence for decades. Daley Thompson and others were there in the 80's. In fact Peter Gabbett, Barry King etc were then in the 70's. Nick Dakin has regularly taken his 400/400H group out there for years.

Good climate, good facilities and good early season competition. Hopefully, impressive performances this year.

there is a large throws squad at chula vista - looks like they have let the gb team back in after banning them previously AccorDDing to the staff we encountered last year. I

I find it strange that they have 'experimented' with this early season camp in the olympic year but it is a welcome return having been suggested several times. I went out there myself in the 90's with others and it was successful and last year such success was continiued with the excellent climate and competition available over there. We came back with 3 pb's last year so you would hope that every athlete would be looking to achieving similar results as they have the conditions, the competiton and the climate to throw pbs' and achieve qualifying marks in bona fide competitions.

As well as the slightly windy 22.75 secs she ran a couple of weeks ago. Not sure we'll see the 22.5 Abi from Athens but maybe a legal 22.7/8 for London!

Abi's having no luck with wind :(

23.10 is the A standard this run is 23.02 with no wind and 22.75 +2.8 is 22.92. It will come :D

Some more good stuff from the youngsters in the hammer circle:

Peter Smith finally drove a bus through the 70m mark with 71.75. He's still only 21, and took his brother's scalp in the process.

23 yo James Bedford fell an agonising 11cm short of joining Peter in the 70m club

Perhaps most excitingly, the not quite 19yo Nick Miller lobbed the senior implement out to 66.88 which is a couple of metres further than Alex Smith managed at the same age.

Well done all - there is some real domestic stength in depth developing.

The news from the hammer circle is welcome and encourging but this event is like the javelin minus goldie a few years ago - quite a few people getting to a decent standard but few if any taking it to the next step. It is one of the oldest records on the book and not really world class/world beating so it is long overdue an amendment. I hope these guys are properly funded and assisted over the next few years. ... just ranted on about funding etc but deleted it all as ive siad it all before!...

I understand that Jade Nichols threw 60.51m for a b standard in La Holla UCSD yesterday which is a great achievement . BTW why isnt Eden out there - apparently she asked. The discus success has been achieved with out a national coach as well.

There were other big throws in the men where there were a few 66m throws two from dutch throwers ( Cadee and Smith - population how many!!!). Apparently Okoye threw 62m again Morse 61m and Duqiem 59m which is a high standard in depth. I think these three and Bulhari and possibly Myerscough will throw today at the mt sacs which should be a great event with a class field. Most of the worlds best throwers are out there at the moment so you would think they would all come together and throw at some stage. Wish i was there!!!!!!

Okoye 62.27
Morse 61.06
Duquemin 59.71
Scott 56.30

Nicholls 60.51

A bit more consistency from Okoye with first two comps over 62m. Good to see an early season throw from Jade over 60m and hopefully a bit more to come.

By the way my prediction last year was for the UK Trials where I thought Brett would come third. He didn't like that and came on here to say so, which is his right. He did, though, finish third! If I was a betting man I would go for, at this early stage, Okoye, Morse and Buhari (not sure what state he's in though) to make our team. Myerscough to go in the shot. I await protests from other athletes!

Lawrence Okoye showed more than a consistent statrt to the season when he won the Mt SAC discus with 66.67m. Brett Morse threw 59.86m.

Hopefully, lawrence will be invited to some of the Diamond League meets this year to gain experience of competing against the best in stadium conditions. I really feel he has a good shot at a medal in London.

That's excellent from Lawrence. His series also contained a 64.66, and a 61....all after starting with a 48! He is undoubtedly the UK's no1 at the moment. Early days of course, but Brett must be concerned by Lawrence's progress and his own form.

And well done to Sarah Holt too.

Looks like he's down to do the Diamond Leagues in Doha and Rome next month. He deserves it and should help to prepare him for London. I wonder what the odds are of him throwing 70m this year? Perhaps getting a bit carried away but it could happen!

He sounds confident and has tweeted there is more to come, and he does not come across as one to talk himslef up and a spy in the camp tells me that he is throwing a lot further than last year. I would not be surprised if he threw 70m this year if the conditions were right. He is bigger and stronger this year and still has a simple technique with plenty of room for improvement, however, his throws fixed feet and he gets a great range when both of his feet are down so gets alot of pull out of his power position. If you get a big strong boy with long levers and a good arm, good things will happen. I can say all this now as i am not involved in coaching any of these throwers anymore and can enjoy it for what it is.

Now Im not involved it is quite relaxing just to watch and enjoy. I should write a book with all that has happened over the past 3 or 4 years. Well I have all the records and e-mails saved - could be a good story for a later date - a kiss and tell - without the kissing!
