I sadly dont think there is any guarantee things will be totally safe.
Whilst I agree with Javman that security will be very tight, there are so many venues to control that nothing can be taken for granted.Not to mention the transport infrastructure. In a nutshell I'm of the opinion that if someone was hell-bent on causing problems they would probably succeed.
I really hope and pray that all goes smoothly.

I think there'll obviously be a tourism boost for London and the venues outside the city like Weymouth, and possibly the cities where Olympic football matches are played, such as (possibly) the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff.

But if you're coming to watch the Games, staying in London mostly, who's going to have the money to make side trips? Not a huge amount of people I should imagine.
