First fell race

Postby Feet in the Cowclaps » Mon Oct 10, 2005 7:27 pm

Any runners out there who have never dared to have a go at a fell race should ask around their local clubs and get a fixture list ... and later become a member of the FRA (Fell Runners' Association).
The Bolton by Bowland fell race on Sunday December 4th might be a good introduction to this fantastic sport. 11.30 a.m. start, 8 miles with 800' ascent.
Any other similar races coming up anyone would like to suggest?

Fancy planning a fell race the same day as the calderdale relays. Did it not pass your mind that with each team needing 12 runners for it that it doesnt leave that many other runners left to enter it!!!!!
Good luck with it, hope you get lots of runners.

...even the southerners on here may find a local 'fell race' -there are races in Cornwall/Devon/Somerset/Dorset/Sussex/Hampshire/IOW/ Gloucestershire and Surrey in the FRA calendar so get out there and give it a go!!

Cornwall, Hampshire and Sussex? Are you sure?

However, I must admit I've lost my FRA calendar so I can't check.

You mean to say your FRA calendar doesnt double up as a two mug place mat on the front room table?

Have definitely been in the past but not entirely sure all were in this year's calendar - Bodmin 5 tors run in Cornwall; Jack n Jill race in Sussex; Butser Hill Challenge in Hants (apparently an AS race - as is one of the IOW races)

Are they really on the same day? Cos our club is already struggling to find 12 runners .......and M2E is the last race in the club championship! Last year the two events were on consecutive sundays.....I know which one I'd rather do!

A lovely run through Kirkby Moor wind farm. Were you there a couple of years ago when Billy Burns failed to notice the finish line, ran through it and carried on until he got down to the main road?

Dunnerdale would be good, starts and finishes at possibly one of the best little pubs in Cumbria, and better than one of my first fell races - Duddon. Had a great day out managing to finish just as the last prize had been presented. Learned to do a lot more quality training after that.

Does anyone know of any decent fell races that take part in the winter months, especially in the Yorks/Derbyshire area?

Seems most fell events are in summer - and in Cumbria!

There are plenty. Become a member of the Fell Runners Association for a measly £12 and you get the calendar and 3 quality magazines a year.

Also your local club must surely be doing the same as us with winter club runs or just come to Cumbria and do the Kendal winter league!
