It's a pity that Dia Greene's big race (an opportunity to break the British record) will probably be upstaged by the Lightening v French Concorde finale (http://bit.ly/ruSjs5) as there are more worthy events to rival the show stopper, like the mens 800m http://bit.ly/ppaJeA

It's nice to see that the Britpack is being well represented at this meet by Goldie Sayers http://bit.ly/pli3EZ , Phillips Iduwo v Teddy Tamgho (again) http://bit.ly/rf4374 , Mo Farrah runs the 5k http://bit.ly/pDnh7I , Ofili-Porter finds herself in the heat of the frying pan alongside the big 3 this season (Pearson, Wells & Carruthers) http://bit.ly/nnzPSK and the ever smiling Lisa Dobrisky finds herself in another battlefield http://bit.ly/pXIKcr

If nobody pulls out or gets injured come race day then this particular meet will answer a big question for many of us all - athletes are not backing out of races before Degau!

Bolt vs Lemaitre vs the other Jamaicans will always take top billing because it's the men's 100 metres, and that is the race that always has been the blue ribbon event. It was that way back in the days of Carl Lewis, Linford Christie, Donovan Bailey, Mo Greene, etc. The 100m is what appeals to the part-time athletics fans, so this race is no different....

But true athletics fans watch nearly all events in the meet.

It might seem that way, but in actual fact the blue riband event was traditionally the mile/1500; this certainly continued to be the case through the era of Lewis and Christie. The pre-eminent position given to the 100 is more recent than we remember: did it really begin much before Bolt appeared on the scene? Perhaps the attention-span of the modern casual viewer plays a part.

I beg to differ on the fact that it's always been the blue ribband event - it depends on where you grew up! Back in the era you talk about there was Ovett v Coe v Cram, Cram v Aquita and the records were tumbling, which is why in that era track meets finished with the 1500m. Granted this year more men have been under 10 seconds than any other season but the mens sprints in terms of head to heads has not been as strong as it could have been compared to the mens 400h.

Part time athletics fans are only interested in the events that happen quickly!

I think the 1500 has always been the blue riband event, historically. What that actually means (other than that the winner
is as classy as the fastest ocean liner) I don't know.

But that leaves plenty of room for the 100 to be the blue ribbon event.
As the shortest of all senior outdoor events, the 100 seems like a bit of an oddity.
Its brevity does seem to make it popular with the TV people these days. But if it is that marketable, why don't
they throw in some 60s and 30s too? Why have all other races much longer than the `most marketable' one?

Well, it hasn't started yet, but it's showing up on my Freeview channel 301 as coming up next. I'm glad 'cos my bandwidth is already stretched to its limit watching the Euro U23 and Euro U20's! And will probably stretch a bit more for Barcelona too.

Remember the famous clip where Moses Tanui punched Gebresalassie during a sprint finish (World Juniors?)?
Did he get a ban for that?
Baala was much worse and since it's a high profile IAAF meeting I think he may miss Daegu for this.

it wasb't Moses Tanui it was Josephat Machuka (good god the crap i know )

Geb trod on the back of Tanui's heel at the 93 worlds Moses kicked it off, clasped his head in his hands shook his fist at Geb and raced off only to be beaten int the sprint
