Well the selections for Daegu look more complicated than they did before this event; Hardee and Eaton look certain IMO but Clay (as a result of not completing the competition) and Morrison (overshadowed by the uncertainty of the eligibility of the NCAA points total he achieved) may try to put together another score this summer although time is running out even though Daegu is late in the season. There will be a lot of anxious discussions between coaches, athletes and officials for the next month or so.

Does anybody have any thoughts on the state of UK selections?

USA Champs & Trials for World Champs - DEC

Bryan Clay, PB 8832 & in Eugene, but back in '08, didn't complete the 6th event, 110H. spraining a calf.
Jake Arnold, PB 8253 '10, only completed 3 events

1 Ashton Eaton, '88, 8729 PB (prev PB 8457 '10)
2 Jon Harlan, '81, 8011 - above Daegu B-standard of 7950 (A-standard 8200) (PB 8171 '04)
3 Miller Moss, '88, 7878 PB (prev PB 7706 '11)

Ashton Eaton, USA, '88, 86kg, 1.85m, PB 8457 '10 - now 8729 '11
10.33 - 8.04 -------- 14.45 - 2.11 - 46.28 ----------- // 13.35 - 43.71 - 5.26 - 53.93 - 4.20.56 - pbs
1016 - 1071 --------- 756 -- 906 --- 994 ------------ // 1060 -- 740 --- 991 -- 647 ----- 808 = 8,989 - with new JT pb (adding 34ps) = 9023
USA Champs '11:
10.33 - 7.80/+3.1 - 14.14 - 2.05 - 46.35 ---------- // 13.52 - 41.58 - 5.05 - 56.19 - 4.24.10
1016 ---- 1010 ------ 737 -- 850 -- 991 (4604) ----- // 1037 -- 697 --- 926 -- 681 ---- 784 = 8729 PB
=PB ------------------------------------- PB by 104pts // --------------------------- PB
WL beating Trey Hardee's 8689 in Gotzis 29may11

Ashton Eaton, in his DEC PB of 8457 '10, after day 1 had a score of 4,500
( 10.37/0.5 - 7.90/1.1 - 12.60 - 2.02 - 46.28 // --- 13.68/1.6 - 41.71 - 4.70 - 54.07 - 4:21.85 )
1006 --------- 1035 ----- 643 --- 822 -- 994 /

Eaton has now added 272pts to his DEC PB.

J Trey Hardee, '84, 1.95m, 82kg, PB 8790 '09, & prev '11 WL 8689, already with a Daegu ticket, but did 2 events in Eugene:
DT 44.91m 765 (pb 52.68 '08); PV 5.05m 926 (pb 5.25 '08)
10.39/0,2 - 7.88/0.6 - 15.94 - 2.06 - 47.51 // 13.71/1.9 - 52.68 - 5.30 - 68.00 - 4.42.23 - pbs
-- 1001 ----- 1030 ------ 848 --- 859 -- 933 // -- 1012 ------ 926 -- 1004 -- 859 ---- 666 = 9,138

So who might gold it in Daegu? Defending Champion Tray or the fast-rising 'youngster' Eaton?

it appears a very close call. We'll go for Eaton perhaps grabbing it in the final 1500m.

###

Bryan Clay, Decathlon (Senior)
On the hurdles:
“I sprained my calf a little bit on the hurdles. Tough setback, but going to get back to training and step it up in the next few meets.
On Ashton Eaton’s early success:
“He’s doing what is expected of him, which is great.”
On the future:
“The other athletes in the Decathlon just told me after the hurdles that they’ve all been there. It’s one of those things and I will just move on to what’s next. It’s important to keep perspective, it’s not the end of my career.”

Ashton Eaton, First Place, Decathlon (Senior)
On the win:
“I didn’t expect to score that high. I didn’t get any big marks. It was constant. My goal in Korea is to win. There’s no timetable when to set the American record.”
[USA NR 8891 Dan O'Brien '91]

Jon Harlan, Second Place, Decathlon (Senior)
On making US Team for World Championships:
“I’m a little surprised to make the team, but everything fell in place. I was prepared for the Pan Am Games. It’s hard to expect everything to fall like it did.”
On his performance:
“It’s hard to keep going sometimes at 30 years old, but I didn’t have too many events go downhill for me. I even had my second best throw in the shot put too.”
On final event:
“I knew I had to go under 4:58 in the final event, and the crowd and competitors were helping out and giving me support. It was a great crowd in Eugene, felt great.”

David, he also ran in the open 110H where he didn't progress beyond the prelims, but ran 13.69 which is a PB I believe.

Woops! Well 1/2 a woops, as he was listed as a DNS in the 110H DEC event. I didn't think to look in the ind 110H event results.

Thank you.

So his event pb goes up from 1012 to 1015 and his total for 10 pbs up from 9,138 to 9,141, 118pts ahead of Eaton.

Do you have a tip for gold in Daegu I wonder?

I'm not touching that one with a bargepole! So much can happen over the course of ten events.
Without any Brits in the running to give my partisan support, I'm just hoping for all the main protagonists to be in good health and form. In a strange way, I'm almost looking forward to this more than the Hep as I can see us all biting our fingernails as we follow Jess.

chick-chick-chicken!!!
Yes, but it is the multiple outcomes that make the DEC/HEP such fascinating events (tho' all events have their fascinating outcomes too of course).

Yes, too, JE will prompt a naily time, and if I put athletics before GBR athletics I'm always delighted when 'our people' do well - and in whatever human endeavour.

So another question! Will the gaps between 1-2-3 be closer in DEC or in HEP??

GBR HEP for Daegu

Daegu standards
HEP: A 6150, B 5950

Jessica Ennis, 6823 31jul10, 6790 this season, will be selected - QED

Louise Hazel, 6156, CG gold Delhi 9oct10, has A standard, done in UKA Qualification Period 1jan10-7aug11
Louise hasn't done a HEP this year, but has done 'reasonably' in some individual events.
It would nice if Louise was sent to Daegu (has she the talent & focus to raise her game further for OLY '12?)

GBR HEP top 4 '10
1 6823 6823 PB Jessica Ennis 28.01.86 Antonio Minichiello City of Sheffield Barcelona, ESP 31 Jul 10
2 6156 6156 PB Louise Hazel 06.10.85 Aston Moore Birchfield H Delhi, IND 9 Oct 10
3 5819 5819 PB Grace Clements 02.05.84 Julie Hollman Dartford H Delhi, IND 9 Oct 10
4 5724 5952 Phyllis Agbo 16.12.85 Darrell Bunn Thames Valley Tallinn, EST 27 Jun 10
GBR HEP top 3 '11
1 6790 6823 Jessica Ennis 28.01.86 Antonio Minichiello City of Sheffield Götzis, AUT 29 May 11
2 5644 5819 Grace Clements 02.05.84 Julie Hollman Dartford H Desenzano Del Garda, ITA 8 May 11
3 5577 5577 PB Katarina Johnson-Thompson U20 09.01.93 Mike Holmes Liverpool H Bedford 5 Jun 11

Phyllis Agbo: the wild card. She DNF in Delhi last OCT, she's appeared again this season, at the 11th hour:
LJ 6.07/2.0 Ashford South of England U20 / Senior Champs 19 Jun 11 (PB: 6.47 '09)
SP 13.12 Hendon London Inter Club Challenge 11 Jun 11 (PB: 13.75 '09)

A quote:
'IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011
UK Athletics Selection Policy (January 2011)
Overview
This selection policy is designed to select a team to achieve the best possible results at the 2011 World
Championships in Daegu.' - which is perhaps open to interpretation.

see
www.uka.org.uk/competitions/fixtures/

I guess the selectors don't have to automatically send a 'full' team.

Interesting that GER aren't involved this weekend in the European Cup Combined Events this weekend. They have some depth, as this year's rankings show:

Where easily to obtain results for the EUR Combined Events Super league (GBR W) and 1st league (GBR M) I don't know.

Meanwhile:

Access to various goodies re Torun (incl GBR HEP team)

Didn't realise she was a Northamptonshire girl. I can't say I've seen her in the red and white hoops of the local athletics club.

Sorry couldn't resist that one.

Your little market town's fame has spread round the world: to AUS (Tasmania), USA (Maryland, Ohio, Oregon) and Jamaica even has one - but of only village status. However Hyleas Fountain has Georgia USA roots & went to the Uni of Georgia so how one of the USA Kettering's features with her I don't know; perhaps there are more Ketterings hiding away, who knows where.

Daniel Awde could be on for an 8000 point score if all goes well on the second day. He's currently in second place with 4128 points after a 46.70 PB 400m. If the vault goes really well we could see something quite special but I may be tempting fate!

A decent 1500 now would have Daniel Awde very close to his DEC PB.
(Even after a mini-disaster in the JT, which probably cost him the chance of 8000+.)

Similarly on target for a PB: Ashley Bryant.

(Not to mention that they are currently in silver and bronze positions respectively.)

...but 55m is 663 pts, so
a solid JT, and Daniel Awde would have sailed over 8000.

Next time!
