A round-up of some of the latest athletics news and results, including top performances at the Paavo Nurmi Games and results from the Ethiopian 10,000m trials in Hengelo

Rohler throws 91.28m

Germany’s Thomas Rohler achieved two 91m-plus throws at the Paavo Nurmi Games (EA Premium) on Wednesday (June 29), with 91.28m in round three and 91.04m in round five.

That 91.28m is not only a world lead and a personal best but also moves Rohler to 11th on the world all-time list.

Julian Weber was second with 86.83m over Antti Ruuskanen’s 83.10m and Tero Pitkamaki’s 83.03m.

The meeting forms part of the IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge and world champion Pawel Fajdek threw 81.12m to win ahead of  Dilshod Nazarov with 78.87m. Another Polish win came in the shot put as Michal Haratyk threw 20.25m.

Guyana’s Troy Doris won the triple jump with a windy 17.06m (+2.2). In the 400m hurdles, Le Roux Hamman clocked 49.44 to beat Oskari Moro’s 49.50.

Other winners were Hungarian Balazs Baji with 13.43 (0.0, also 13.41 +0.7 in heats) at the 110m hurdles, Moroccan junior record-holder Mostafa Smaili 1:47.07 in the 800m and Ghana’s Sean Safo-Antwi 10.23 (+0.6) in the 100m to beat Dutch Solomon Bockarie with 10.24.

A fast 5000m had Kenyan Josephat Menjo winning in 13:20.51 over Australians Pat Tiernan 13:20.88 and David McNeill 13:23.87, with Britain’s Andy Vernon fourth in 13:26.16.

Local star Nooralotta Neziri posted 12.91 (+0.2, also 12.87 +1.2 in heats) in the sprint hurdles. Sara Petersen of Denmark 56.07 at 400m hurdles, Poland’s Danuta Urbanik 4:06.58 in the 1500m and French Ophelie Claude-Boxberger 9:34.96 ahead of Sviatlana Kudzelich of Belarus with 9:41.21 and Denmark’s Anna Emilie Moller 9:41.43 in the steeplechase.

Taika Nummi clocked 12:30.81 in the 3000m walk. In the javelin, Australian Kathryn Mitchell threw 63.80m to beat Li Lingwei with 61.79m and Christina Obergfoll’s 61.38. In the pole vault the top three got over 4.52m as Minna Nikkanen won and there was a tie for second between Wilma Murto and Swiss record-holder Nicole Buchler.

10,000m world leads by Ethiopian athletes in Hengelo

World leads highlighted the special Ethiopian 10,000m trials in Hengelo organised by Global Sports Communication.

Almaz Ayana won in 30:07.00 for what is not only the top mark so far in 2016 but also puts her eighth on the all-time list. It was her debut at the distance on the track. Second was Gelete Burka with a 30:28.47 PB and third Olympic champion Tirunesh Dibaba with 30:28.53. These are the top three times by Ethiopians for Olympic selection.

There were fast times also for fourth-placer Netsanet Gudeta with a 30:36.75 PB, Genet Yalew in fifth with a 30:37.38 PB.

In the men’s race, Yigrem Demelash clocked a world lead and PB of 26:51.11 beating Tamirat Tola’s 26:57.45 and Abadi Embaye with a 26:57.88 debut. They are now the top three Ethiopians by time for Olympic selection. The top 11 went under 28 minutes. Among the non finishers were Ibrahim Jeilan, Yenew Alamirew, Imane Merga and Kenenisa Bekele.

Bekele now targets autumn marathon

World record-holder Kenenisa Bekele dropped out after 7 km on Wednesday in the 10,000m track qualifier in Netherlands.

“Not enough speed, not enough time after London Marathon. Now he will prepare for a fall marathon,” explained his agent Jos Hermens.

US Olympic trials

The US Olympic trials begin on Thursday (June 30) with both the men’s and women’s 20 km walk races in Salem, Oregon.

On Friday, the Olympic qualifiers will be decided in the men’s 10,000m and shot put (all the top names competing, only Christian Cantwell is missing).

Lolo Jones has scratched from the 100m hurdles and Olympic medallist in 4x400m Manteo Mitchell was not accepted to compete this time due to his best time of 45.82 in the qualifying period.

Christophe Lemaitre targets European Champs

Christophe Lemaitre pulled out of the 100m final at the French Championships last weekend with a calf injury but his coach Pierre Carraz still expects his pupil to compete at the European Championships in Amsterdam which begins next Wednesday.

He has entered the 100m and 200m as well as the relay.

Also not running was 800m record-holder Pierre-Ambroise Bosse, but his agent Rene Auguin confirmed he is set to compete in Amsterdam.
