Will Jesicca Ennis win W PEN in Paris (EUR in)? - only 6 weeks away!
Will Dobrynska have the motivation to very closely challenge again for gold in Paris & Daegu?
Who besides will be the best bet for a podium slot in Daegu HEP: Fountain, Oeser, Chernova?
Will Skujyte's (LTU, WR W DEC 8358 '05, HEP PB 6435 '04) return & be a threat to the top HEP athletes?
Will JE beat the W PEN in WR?
Will JE find an extra 9pts to beat the GBR NR HEP?
Will cover-page, CG Champ Louise Hazel move up a notch in Paris/Daegu?
Will GBR's DEC men continue to go to new heights in '11?
Will Ashton Eaton top his M HEP in WR of 6499?
Will USA's Clay, Eaton, Arnold & CUB's Garcia/Suarez be a match for EUR stars Barraas, Sintnicolaas, Kasyanov in Daegu world champs?

JE
JE has suggested that she is feeling a bit the pressure on her as a Ldn '12 gold prospect.
Hopefully she and her coach can just steadily nudge away at her performances in each of the 7 events, so that her overall excellence sees a better total HEP score look after itself.
It would be nice if things occasionally come together and she can for instance:
- make her '07 200 of 23.15 an '11/'12 PB
- make her '07 HJ of 1.95 an '11/'12 PB
- keep nudging up her LJ, SP & JT PBs in '11 & '12
Already in '11 (in) JE has a PB SP (in) of 14.11 (pres PB in 14.01; PB SP out: 14.25)
JE, don't get injured.

What a season before us to see unfold.

Jessica Ennis did SP-well at the weekend, adding 1/2-meter to her SP personal best (PB)

Ashton Eaton Men's HEP (in) WR-holder, meanwhile, over the water at the Princeton Relays, did quite well too!:
- his birthday (born 21jan88)
- added over 1-meter to his SP PB doing 14.18 (prev PB in 13.12, PB out 13.11)
- improved his 60mH from 7.77 to 7.68
- improved his 800 PB from ?? to 1.55.90
- missed his PV (in) PB by just 5cm doing 5.10 (PBin 5.15, PB out 5.26)

Ashton's WR HEP (in) of 6499 might just top 6500 before the 2011 (in) season is over.

Ashton Eaton, USA, WR-holder men HEP (in) 6499

How does Ashton's 1.55.90 800 run at the weekend, a distance not included in men's HEP (in)/DEC activity, fit in with his HEP/DEC middle-distance running and performance generally in the multi-events?

A look at the all-time HEP (in) list will reveal that his 2.32.67 is the fastest in the list

see
www.iaaf.org/statistics/toplists/inout= ... etail.html

In the DEC not many are faster, the fastest being 8436, Dezso Szabo, HUN 4.11.07 '90

see
www.iaaf.org/statistics/toplists/inout= ... etail.html

The scoring tables give as follows on his PBs:
800 1.55.90 (915) '11
1km 2,32,67 (957), '10
1.5k 4.20.56 (808), '08

'Sotherton will one day return to the heptathlon'

For now it's 400; she's done 50.35r

“I still need to learn how to run the 400m, the tactics of it, how to pace the race, how to judge the first 200m, whether to run a fast first half, how to judge the bends, how to get the heats right and how to run in one-off races”

'I will end my career with a heptathlon. It doesn’t matter where it is, or what I score – the heptathlon is where my heart is.'

see

###

'It is hard to imagine anyone who weighs 57kg and stands just 5ft 5in tall inspiring too much fear, but that is just one of the goals for Jessica Ennis this year.'

"fear factor" over her opponents, Ennis added: "I think it definitely helps.

I was hoping ennis would at least have some decent competition in the form of chernova or dobrynska, if she is miles ahead of the field, she might not have the motivation to dig out something deep :/

You raise an interesting point. Ennis maybe near the record before the final event, the 800m. Will she dig deep to grasp the record. Eaton certainly did for his Men's HEP (IN) WR in Fayetteville, AR last March (& he may have to today in Tallinn), so Perhaps Ennis can in Paris if need be.

Off the top of my head I don't know how good the 10 going to Paris are at 800 ...

I note also, of the top EUR PEN/HEP athletes that there is no Oeser, GER, no Schwarzkopf, GER, no Yosypenko, UKR.

So at least a couple who might be there with Ennis in that vital last 200 of the 800.

More on Eaton's 1st day in Tallinn

HJ 1.98m 1st attempt, 2.01 1st attempt, 2.04: 3 fails 'problems with his run up.'

“I’m absolutely not satisfied. I was 100 points ahead (of his world record) going into the high jump and now I’m just 17 points ahead of pace. I left a lot of points out there in the long jump too but I’m happy with the way I am running,” said Eaton.

“I don’t know what it is, the calves cramp. It happened in the blocks last week at Millrose Games and it happened again today in the 60m and then again in the high jump.

'Raja [EST] cleared a personal best of 2.10m in high jump to retain second place at the end of the first day with 3444 points while Šebrle went over 2.07m and is third overnight with 3402 points.'

Jessica Ennis made a last-minute decision to skip competing in the high jump this weekend in Sheffield, but rising pole vault star Holly Bleasdale has confirmed her participation for the McCain City Indoor Challenge.

Ennis, whose team stressed that her withdrawal was definitely not injury-related, will next compete at the UK Indoor Trials – also in Sheffield.

Any news on why Ennis didn't compete?

Ashton Eaton has done the business 2011 indoors - another story how he'll do 2011 outdoors for DEC.

And Jessica Ennis 2011 indoors, tipped to claim the PEN WR, in a month's time in Paris, EUR (IN) Champs ...

event ... 60h ... HJ .... SP ...... LJ ..... 800 ...... PEN
Belova 8.22 - 1.93 - 13.25 - 6.67 - 2:10.26 = 4991 Irina Belova EUN b.'68, 61kg, 1.75m Berlin 15/02/92 WR
points 1079 - 1145 - 744 -- 1062 -- 961
IB pbs 8.22 - 1.93 - 14.12 - 6.82 - 2.02.06 ... (HEP PB 6845)
points 1079 - 1145 - 802 - 1112 -- 1084

Ennis . 8.04 - 1.90 - 14.01 - 6.44 - 2:12.55 = 4937 Jessica Ennis GBR b.'86, 57kg, 1.65m, Doha 13/03/10
points 1120 - 1106 - 795 --- 988 ---- 928
JE pbs 7.95 - 1.95 - 14.61 - 6.51 - 2.09.88 ... (HEP PB 6823)
points 1141 - 1171 - 835 -- 1010 --- 966

In HJ 1cm = 13pts, so if in Paris Ennis:
- does 13 points below her pb in each event then 'plan A' below
- does 26 points below her pb in each event then 'plan B' below

plan A 8.01 - 1.94 - 14.42 - 6.47 - 2.10.83 = 5057
pb-13 1127 - 1158 - 822 --- 997 --- 953
plan B 8.07 - 1.93 - 14.22 - 6.42 - 2.11.72 = 4992 - we didn't plan this total, it emerged! adding 55 to her PB
pb-26 1114 - 1145 - 809 -- 984 --- 940

4992 is 1pt above the WR - QED

I reckon the indoor heptathlon (men) is a relatively ''soft'' WR.
At the moment I dont rate Eaton as the best decathlete I've ever seen, but he might just develop into one. He is relatively young to be doing what he's doing.

Jess most definately rates as one of the top three heptathletes of all-time IMO, alongside Miss Kluft (brilliant) and Miss Joyner(dodgy?). If her HJ remains in the 1-90's she will likely break the world indoor record.I don't subscibe to the view I've read on this forum that her long jump is disappointing. I'm very sure that she will get it right one day soon and leap 6-60+

Ashton Eaton, Yes I agree that the indoor HEP(men) WR is 'soft', and your reflection prompts me to think how high should it go to = the DEC WR (tables looking time!). It will be very interesting to see how much Eaton reduces the gap between his DEC best of 8457 & the WR 9026 - adding 57 points per event on average. The way he is improving his PBs we might see something startling in the next year or two.

Jessica will get up to 6.60 in the next 2 seasons I feel. Watching her progress in the next year or two will be interesting too.

'Eaton sets new World record in Tallinn with 6568 points'

more info:
- '[Eaton] had a good 40-50cm push-off reserve in the Long Jump'

- 'Prominent Estonian athletes include Aleksander Klumberg-Kolmpere, the world’s first world record owner in decathlon (7485.61 points in 1922), and Erki Nool, decathlon Olympic winner in Sydney.'

ALSO re Eaton:
- ' "I made some bars in the pole vault on the third attempt when I really needed them." ' - we put the PV as the main potential downfall event for day 2 - this man Eaton appears to be good mentally.

"I had a bad high jump," he said. "I took off way behind the board in the long jump. I could have run better in the 1000, and although the (shot) was a big personal best, I know I can keep getting better."

We agree.

Roman Sebrle, WR holder of the far-less 'soft' DEC (out) WR, might give us a guide as to what might constitute a less-soft HEP (IN) WR, though he has done the HEP (IN) every year since 1998, but perhaps he's treated indoor winter-spring activity as minor-peak activity? His PB of 6438 does however rank him 3rd on the all time list.

Sebrle HEP event pbs

LJ 8.11 .... 1089
SP 16.47 ... 880
HJ 2.15 ..... 994

- 1k: at least once every year 1999-2011 except 2010
- 60H: at least once every year 1997-2011

Perhaps it is that the HEP (IN) is not contested so often as the DEC (OUT) and doesn't have an OLY status, so the record is just indeed a bit 'soft'.

---
Re Eaton's DEC (OUT) prospects: the other events, not in the HEP, but included in the DEC, their pbs:
Sebrle 100: 10.37; 400: 47.76; 1.5k: 4.21.98; 110H: 13.79; DT: 49.46; JT: 71.18
................ 1006 ........ 921 ............ 798 .............. 1002 ........... 859 .......... 907 ...... = 5493

Eaton 100: 10.33; 400: 46.28; 1.5k: 4.20.56; 110H: 13.54; DT: 43.71; JT: 53.93
................ 1016 ........ 994 ............ 808 .............. 1035 ........... 740 .......... 647 ...... = 5240 ie 253pts less

Sebrle's DEC pbs
100 10.37 ... 1006
LJ 8.11 ....... 1089
SP 16.47 ....... 880
HJ 2.15 ......... 994
400 47.76 ..... 921
110H 13.79 . 1002
DT 49.46 ...... 859
PV 5.20 ........ 972
JT 71.18 ....... 907 (these CZE athletes know how to do JT!; world all-time 2nd ranked DEC, Dvorak, CZE 72,32 JT)
1.5k 4.21.98 . 798
total ............. 9428
PB / total pbs = 95.74%

Eaton's DEC pbs
100 . 10.33 . 1016
LJ ... 8.04 . 1071
SP .. 14.45 .. 756
HJ .... 2.11 .. 906
400 . 46.28 . 994
110H 13.54 1035
DT . 43.71 . 740
PV ... 5.26 . 991
JT ... 53.93 . 647
1.5k 4.20.56 808
total ........... 8964 ie 464pts less
PB / total pbs = 94.12%

Many athletes have a PB/total pbs of 96%-98% (eg Jessica Ennis: 4937/5123 = 96.36%)
Eaton will, we are sure, go about pulling in some of the slack.

Sebrle's (WR) & Eaton's (ranked 57th) DEC PBs:
1 9026 Roman Šebrle CZE 26/11/1974, 88kg, 1.86m, 1 Götzis 27/05/2001
( 10.64/0.0 - 8.11/1.9 - 15.33 - 2.12 - 47.79 / 13.92/-0.2 - 47.92 - 4.80 - 70.16 - 4:21.98 )
57 8457 Ashton Eaton USA 21/01/1988, 86kg, 1.85m, 1 Eugene, OR 11/06/2010
( 10.37/0.5 - 7.90/1.1 - 12.60 - 2.02 - 46.28 / 13.68/1.6 - 41.71 - 4.70 - 54.07 - 4:21.85 )

So which ever way you look at things, and however much you play with the figures Eaton has a long way to go on the DEC (out) front, though he may surprise us with how quickly he progresses to the top/to near the top in '11 / '12.

Eaton has peaked now in February. Can he produce another peak in June-August time for US Trials/World Champs? Now out of College he certainly doesn't have to run his heart out in the College system.

Eaton's 2011 possible DEC score? - try 8700
