Rankings news

Postby d pickup » Wed May 19, 2010 5:08 pm

I know Isabre is skeptical of ranking lists, and I would want him to heathily retain some skepticism ('Do not let yourself be tainted with a barren skepticism'. Louis Pasteur; lots more wonderful sketicism quotes at: www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/skepticism.html).

However I think a little list-teasing here and there can be shall we say useful / entertaining / delightful - take your pick.

Aim: update on Wednesdays the previous week ending Sundays, with 'extras' through the week

(DT 62.99 Brett Morse, 8may20 was neglected by IAAF & Tilastopaia a week ago or so. What do we see now: his 61.11 of 16.05.10 gets IAAF listing (his 62.99 would place 21st), and, and now sadly in Tilastopaia's top 20 (which has, when prodded, incorporated the differences it had with the IAAF's listings placed in this forum) 20th is 63.22. Anyway Morse still tops the GBR list.)

Quite a vibrant week (if I get 10/10 here for accuracy from Isabre I'll be surprised).

Nicol Kyriakopoulou actually equalled the Greek national record of 4.55m held by Afroditi Skafida but I can safely tell that it's only a matter of time before she takes it a lot higher provided she stays healthy. Doha seems to turn a happy ground for her as she was a top eight finalist at the WIC there last March.

I can safely tell, though, that the EAA rankings aren't quite reliable and many times take long to get updated properly. For instance, where Andy Turner's 13.37 secs from Manchester last Sunday tops the European rankings, Lawrence Clarke's 13.74 secs set in the very same race is missing!!!!

Carl Myerscough's 19.99m was indeed set outdoors in the States during the winter regardless of the fact that he was selected for the WIC in Doha on that.

Emily Freeman's 23.29 secs was set over a straight 200m so cannot count as proper UK women's 200m topper.

www.athlerecords.net

This is a wonderful (subscription) site that collects athletic national records. One can play around with the data.

M 100m for instance. We all know the WR and which country. Where does the GBR record rank? How many nat recs are under 10.00? Which nation has the slowest nat rec?

1 JAM 9.58 Bolt '09
8= GBR 9.87 Christie '93
18 countries under 10.00
last BHU 12.63 Kinley Tenzin '94, '09

Interesting!!!!
TRI 9.86 done 4 times by Boldon: '98 (2), '99 (2)
SKN 9.98 done 3 times by Collins: '02 (3)

Which continent's rec is the slowest?
WR (AMN), AFR, EUR, OCE, ASI, AMS (10.00)

Have any nat recs been broken this year?
ZAM 10''13, EGY 10.22, HKG 10''28, LTU 10''33, NIU 10''59, TKS 10.60, MDV 10.89 (twice on the same day)

Oldest rec?
MAD 10''18 +2.0 Jean-Louis Ravelomanantsoa 1943 13/10/1968 Mexico
TAN 10''57 Norman Chihota 1947 13/10/1968 Mexico

+ another 11 countries records over 80m

21 records set in this Millennium out of the 48 over 80m

The best this Milliemium, done in '02, is 5.87m short of the WR.

NOR's Andreas Thorkildsen, '82, leads the modern thrust at 91,59m 02/06/06. Is there more to come from him? He led the world in '09 with 91.28.

Or a breakthrough from elsewhere in '10?, 11? 12?

Above, in the W 3km st ch, we see the fast evolving of the event, an event that has only about 10 years in International activity, being only a World Champs even since 2005 and and OLY event since 2008, though 10 mins was first broekn back in 1998 (9.55.28 Petrescu, ROM, 21jun98).

Is it pertienent to note that the JT, as currently practiced ie with a new style javelin, has been going since 18.11.91 ie 18 years. One wonders what state the NAT recs would be if the javelin specs had not been changed and not changed either on 1apr86.

Interesting with the 6 continental records: 3 are in the 90s, with ASI even in the 80s & only AMN & OCE this millennium.

PS Wiki includes some JT listings too

World wide New National Records
wk m 31may - su 06jun ............ 45

What caught my eye especially:
HT 78,30 Anita Wlodarczyk 85 POL 06/06
- WR, and she thinks 80m by the end of the year
HJ 2,25 Mutaz Essa Barshim 91 QAT 05/06
- World (in) Champs, being in QAT mar'10, I noted their records at the time and saw how many records were recent & by very young athletes, especially their women, but this year not a dicky bird, just the 400r 51.75.
100 10''84 +1.8 Kelly-Ann Baptiste 1986 TRI 05/06/2010 Clermont
- not much to her at 54kg/1.67m
5000 17'47''47 Maria Ferris 84 PAN 05/06
- not the slowest by a long long way; that belongs to:
- NFI 25'35''0m Virginia Christian-Bailey 07/11/1992
800 1'42''23 Abubaker Kaki 89 SUD 04/06
- what a performance (5th all-time list) from the World Champ (in), but there's Rudisha to content with!
5000 12'54''12 Bernard Lagat 74 USA 04/06
5000 12'57''25 Alemayehu Bezabeh 86 ESP 04/06
- hoping Farah will join the sub-13 club soon
PV 4,85m Fabiana de Almeida Murer 81 BRA 04/06
- Isinbaeva out at present, so can Murer take Suhr, USA (4.92 '08, 4.81 '09, tho' nothing this year, yet) & how good is Feofanova, (4.88 '02) still? on the comeback trail (4.80i doha '10)
SP 21,58 Dylan Armstrong 81 CAN 02/06
- he wants 22m this year, but he's against big opponents:
1 22.10 Cory Martin USA '85 196/115 22 May
2 21.83 Ryan Whiting USA '86 190/116 27 May
3 21.82 Christian Cantwell USA 80 193/154 14 May

roseben, Wed Jun 09, 2010 5:23 pm

Thanks for your inputs. roseben + dp might make a good team!

- 'Top 10' - yes I meant 'top 20'.
- Idowu: indeed, 2nd in TJ; how did I make that mistake!!!
- Oni (9th), Parsons (11=) indeed, + Bernard (18th=) HJ (must have concentrated on my coffee)
- Greene (14th) 400H

Transferring from window to window on the computer the highlighted find 'GBR' disappears on Tilastopaja's listing. 4 apologies required!!!! but I'm glad on a re-look that I picked up Bernard!

speedy2012, Wed Jun 09, 2010 6:40 pm

I'm glad you asked.

I used
www.tilastopaja.org/db/toplist.php?list ... eason=2010

I wait until WED to give the site a chance to grab the previous week's activity.

I do look at IAAF list; yes, sometimes they take a while to update, as does Tilastopja, as does Larsson's SWE site ... as does the FRA site that gathers National Records from c.200 nations!

Please, if you feel inclined, look at my entry of Tue May 11, 2010 3:14 pm in 2010 British Outdoor Season (section 14) where I compare IAAF & Til re men DT emerging from our Brett Morse being 'ignored.' I picked up 8 'anomolies' between the 2 lists. The compilers do so well I think on what must be a complex task.

All of which doesn't excuse my omissions picked up by eagle-eye roseben.

Don't be too hard on yourself...you're doing a great job!!!

Just one observation:
Recently one journalist on the Sportinglife.com site wrote that Ohuruogu's poor form continues, or words to that effect.Makes me laugh since she is ranked 8th in the World this year! She has simply been pitting herself against the very best this year, and will undoubtedly raise her profile when the Championships come along.
Perhaps the journalist should take a look at the rankings that you provide for us on here, DP!

'journalist should take a look at the rankings that you provide for us on here'

Thanks for the compliments, and your comment is interesting, not because you refer to me, but generally re this Forum. I look at all sorts here at home and round the world, and journalists will too, but who looks at us, us really being just a group of enthusiasts (given a slot by AW, that has some status and tradition) even if some I guess have a deep and intimate current knowledge of the sport, are active in it daily and articulate with it too; their views are surely worthy of been given at least a glance by the 'official media' - if they have the patience to wade through so much in the Net to find a few gems. Meanwhile for our pastime pleasure and a chance to chip in - if prompted.
