Oldest UK Extant World Record Holder?

Postby Tipton Harrier » Wed Jun 01, 2011 2:59 pm

I was musing as to just who is the oldest living UK former/current World Record holder for an athletics event?

Roger Bannister - Mile - now aged ?
Ron Bentley - 24 Hour (Set 1973) - now aged 80

Any thoughts

I think all the women who set 4 x 100 yards WRs at the 58 Commonwealth Games and in 56 in Budapest are still alive.
Heather Armitage is the oldest at 78.

It doesn't say he's the oldest living Olympic Athlete but here is a Wikipedia entry.

Hate to boast but I help compile that site . Look for the Welsh surname on the contributors page.
Juan Reccius' grandson contacted us last year about his grandfather.

It's wiki related that I asked. An editor there has compiled a list of all living Olympians aged 90+. Many of them are likely deceased but there is no confirmation. If there was confirmation (from IOC or IAAF) that he is the oldest living track and field competitor it would help trim down the list.

Another oldie who's still around is the Australian Betty Moore who set a 80H WR while running for England in 1962. She will be 78 later this year.
