Postby d pickup » Mon Mar 01, 2010 1:29 pm

This topic is for poems of WR athletes.

We'll start with the current WR (out) holders (in the 'standard' events); we'll start using clerihews, light-hearted 4-liners that rhyme aabb with the 1st line being the name of the person involved. Comments and alternative contributions welcomed.

No more lambing time for Mary & Samuel

They come from farms, remote, the countryside
sophistications of the modern world
denied to them, them often very poor
but all can run, and they run rather well
environmentally they shift, then wow!
emerge so fast, run fast, they’re right up there.

Kisok, Baringo, that’s her farmland home
from Kenya’s Highlands, it’s Rift Valley stuff.
She’s been around, another Kenyan K
for quite a while in fact, yes all those K’s!
Keitany, Mary Jepkosgei her name
and this weekend she made her mark, gained fame
world record for the twenty five K m
one forty seconds off the record, Smash!
That is a smash too, not a little chip.
She’s run in Champs, world champs, gained silver too
3 years ago, then baby time, then back
back with a bang, last autumn, Birmingham
1/2-marathon, and gold this time, great time
the 2nd fastest that there’s ever been
We think she’ll hit far greater heights this year
next year, and venture to the marathon.
Watch out you two hour twenty stars, gear up
Another Kenyan K might ruffle times.

Another smash occurred too this weekend
same place, same length of run, another K
another Kenyan win, but male this time
one Samuel Kiplimo Kosgei triumphed
near minute off the record 6 years old

So new to top ranks he’s not Wiki blogged
well yes he is but it’s in German there

He’s been around, ranked in the top-10 lists
and was with Haile, WR 30k
as pacer in the Berlin marathon
last autumn time; the signs were there for sure.
So little is there said about this man
so we will let him speak now for himself
‘... first marathon ... my goal to beat him [Haile]’!

25k rd WRs 9may10
M Samuel Kosgei, ‘86, 1.11.50, ‘10
prev WR Paul Kosgei, KEN, ‘78, 1.12.45, ‘04

W Mary Keitany, KEN, ‘82, 1:19:53, ‘10

Sprinters

Mr Powell
well he hasn’t thrown in the towel
and says he’s as fit
as he’s ever been and has the bit
between his teeth
so is looking for the wreath
and beating Usain
who is the bane
of his life
oh the strife
of it all
back against the wall
well Bolt’s so tall
and fast
and past
the tape
all else in his wake

and Mr Gay *
he made spring hay
had a record, real great day
outdoors English bright not grey
in sunny, rain-famous Manchester in May
running all his worth down a street, not for play
but on a track, that the city-centre civic there did lay
and it was tested too, certified for record purposes, ok
with a low barrier, keeping the very close watchers at bay
what intimacy with athletic power, and free, no need to pay
the wonderful black Mexico fist man Tommie Smith held sway
he was there, on tv, at stake his record , & like all records, is clay
ready to see it beat, how he moved his hands, oh he’s a great gay jay
while Gay, folded arms, rather lifeless, not with rival Bolt’s outward fray
but to the start and black-beret, blue-geared lane 3 Gay all worry did allay
Bang! Their off, no bends, just straight, straight, straight, hold on don’t sway
past old buildings, new ones too, past crowds cheering, leading, leading a sharp ray
no clues from bends, the finish so far, through 100, through 150, sure not now say nay
it’s a yes, the record claimed, forty four years it took, just 0.09 in the end, so for Gay a V-day
you know running two hundred metres like that, however helpful the crowd it’s a long, long way, I say.

POWELL in YARDS

The mile it hangs in there
Elizabeth the first's measure *
amidst the metric lengths
while yards they've gone, the history books
but No! Ostrava said why not
let's stick a pole here in the ground
just here at ninety one four four
yes hundred yards, there stop the clocks
Asafa Powell, he stopped the clocks
nine, zero nine, nine, zero seven **
the World best ever, well that had been timed
They placed him kneeling, he had a smile
and by his side, it all in lights
9.07, for the papers and the history books.

Anita Wlodarczyk *, POL, '85, 1.78m/88-94kg, 78.30, 6jun10 WR

She is the first, the very, very first
to break this year a Record of the World
oh there have been some others, WBPs
but with the Ladies Hammer it's for real
an IAAF list record, the best
she beat the record of last year, her own
in Berlin at the World Champs what a win
she jumped for joy, result: a wound!
she's now ok but still the ice at hand
and this time there were just no jumps for joy
And did the record increase very much?
Berlin, past previous Lysenko's: sixteen
that's not much more than just 1 hammer ball **
that's centimetres; this time thirty four.

* annual progress
