London 2012 prediction contest (and the winners are...)

Anybody interested is welcome to participate. Participation is very easy: all you need to do is predict the medallists in all 47 events, including the ones you don't care much about. You need not worry about niceties such as spelling or formatting as long as all your picks are unambiguous. Missing, impossible or ambiguous picks will be replaced by a default selection of Carl Myerscough regardless of which event we're talking about. This is a very harsh punishment so all entrants with problematic entries will be notified. If your entry is strange enough your local nuthouse will be contacted instead. The defending champions are Geoff and Ecosse - anyone feel like challenging their crowns?

The scoring system is very simple. You get one point for every correct top 3 pick, one point for every correct top 2 pick and one point for every correct top 1 pick. For example, if you predict the top three in men's 100 metres will be Bolt - Blake - Gay and the actual podium is Blake - Bolt - Gatlin, you will receive 4 points for that event: 2 for correctly predicting Bolt and Blake in the top three and 2 for correctly predicting Bolt and Blake as the top two. The maximum score for any one event is 6 points (for a perfect prediction) and the maximum score for the whole contest is 47 * 6 = 282 points. The situation as of the first physical presentation of medals in an event is considered binding; later disqualifications or other changes will not affect scoring.

Please note you have to earn your own points, even if your ability to do so has been handicapped by seeing BBC talking heads instead of Diamond League meets. I will not tax the leaders and distribute their points to the needy.

The prize system will be familiar from previous years. First prize is bragging rights as the universe's top punter and the satisfaction of being the best of the best. The last place finisher gets a virtual wooden spoon (the real thing may be provided in the unlikely event he or she actually turns up on my doorstep with proper identification).

The deadline for posting or editing your entry is 09:00 UK time on 3 August 2012, 1 hour before action commences. Late entries will not be accepted unless they're too hopeless to damage my chances of winning, so please submit your predictions in time.

A template is provided below, I hope it is helpful. Just copying the template and leaving all predictions unchanged is considered bad form but is always an option for those feeling particularly lazy. Note that the template does not represent my predictions, which will be posted later.

Hope I didn't pick anyone who didn't even make their national squad I started this a few days ago, before Idowu pulled out of the training camp. But I'm keeping him there, I feel lucky (and I have money riding on him and refuse to accept it's gone).

A quick look reveals Koech, Mateelong and Soboleva. The Kenyans are sending Kipruto, Kemboi and Mutai in the steeplechase... some have suggested Koech could replace either Mutai or Kemboi, but this doesn't seem very likely. The Russians are sending Kostetskaya, Martynova and Tomashova in the w1500.

As far as I know full official entry lists aren't up yet, but good sources for now include BBC's Oly site, london2012.com's version of same and Wikipedia's "[insert nation here] at the 2012 Summer Olympics" articles (which I've been using as they generally seem quite up-to-date).

We could get 18 medals if everything went well and the home factor kicked in - but go for half to 3/4 rule should be about right and there may be a shock or two. 80,000 brits will get that extra spurt that the mid distance runners need - maybe the 400m men and women may rise to it and three good brit 400h men and women - it just depends on how good the rest are as well? I think we will smash the record total from last time (all sports ,maybe double it) and we should get 10-12 on track and field. In spite of some of the goings on in UKA over the past few years and unhappiness - this must be our best prepared team ever although they have messed up a few good athletes e.g. our sprinters in general I am excited and looking forward to a great games. If the medals fall below 6 or 7 then this would be a bad games for the team. I think the 8 medal with one gold is a low call.
