Hardee is chugging along OK but faces the big test of his elbow later today. Clay was doing pretty well until a very slow 400m - he may expect to pass Hardee with his strong discus and javelin, but his 1500m has never been fast and age won't help him in that.

Apparently Clay had to stand on his starting line for 12 minutes before doing his 400. The suggestion is that he will get over 8200 but my money is for Hardee to finish ahead of him, unless Hardee's elbow lets him down in the PV and JT

The heptathlon is next Friday/Saturday - not the smartest idea for the usatf site to merely use the days rather than the dates when the trials run over two weekends.

Ashton Eaton well down on his PBs in the hurdles (13.70 today) and discus (42.81). I think he can forget the US record for now. Hardee (13.71 and 49.05) has reduced the gap slightly.

Eaton's at it again! Clear first time at 5.20 in the pole vault for another PB (previous best 5.15).

Hardee clear at 5.00, two failures so far at 5.20.

If he throws 56.00 in the javelin (PB is 57.23) and runs 4:21 in the 1500m (PB is 4:18.94), he'll finish with 8,951 points... 60 points clear of Dan O'Brien's US record and third best of all time.

I thought his PB in the javelin was just over 60m. He'll be there or there abouts with the US record but conditions may have just been against him for the world record. You never know though!

Good point, Geoff - IAAF lists his PB as 57.23, but Wikipedia says he threw 60.26 in April at Stanford. Wouldn't be the first time the IAAF has failed to update someone's PB...

[EDIT: It looks like a strong series on that day, too: 57.35m 60.26m 59.46m FOUL PASS PASS]

In the unlikely event that he exactly matches his PBs of 60.26 and 4:18.94... he'll have 9,029, 3pts more than Sebrle.

Update: 58.87 in the javelin - not a PB, but his best throw in a decathlon. The magic number for a WR is apparently 4:16.93 in the 1500m, although my calculations suggest he might need to be very slightly faster than that. (4:36 will be enough for a US record.)

The final results show that Clay wasn't disq in 110H (well he was for hand pushing a hurdle, and then reinstated) but did fail to register a DT distance, trying so hard but not knowing at that stage that his 110H time would count after all

His day 2 is seen as weaker than his day 1, so he's been moving in the right direction with his training

His 400 was a whole 1.02 s down on his pb (his 2 other 400s this year have been 45.68, 45.87). Did that reflect a tiring day or the weather?? Perhaps a bit of both, but still his 6th best

His 110h was also a bit down (13.70-0. & his worse of the 4 outings this year (pb 13.34 '12) & he did 13.35, 13.52 & 13.52 again in '11, but still his 8th best

All his throws were satisfactory, SP 7th best, DT 6th best, JT 2nd best; HJ 6th= best

Will he do even better in Ldn? But London weather ...
