'Hardee tests recovery from elbow surgery in Olympic trials'

Trey Hardee, World Champ DEC '09 & '11

ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow had been torn from his humerus bone doing his PB JT in Daegu

'reconstructive surgery usually requires at least a year of recovery time. But just nine months after undergoing that procedure, Hardee will compete in the U.S. Olympic trials Friday and Saturday'

'elbow mainly just affects .. javelin and the pole vault'

First-day scores from the US below - Eaton's 4728 is the second-best non-wind-aided score ever. Apparently it rained all day, which makes his performance even more impressive.

Hardee is chugging along OK but faces the big test of his elbow later today. Clay was doing pretty well until a very slow 400m - he may expect to pass Hardee with his strong discus and javelin, but his 1500m has never been fast and age won't help him in that.

1 Ashton Eaton 4728
10.21 (w: +0.4)
8.23m (w: +0.8)
14.20m
2.05m
46.70 "in rain that was so strong it caused the starter’s gun to malfunction"

2 Trey Hardee 4406
10.50
7.55m
15.72m
1.99m
49.11

3 Bryan Clay 4252
10.45
7.40m
15.63m
1.96m
51.21

Tuckin

Apparently Clay had to stand on his starting line for 12 minutes before doing his 400. The suggestion is that he will get over 8200 but my money is for Hardee to finish ahead of him, unless Hardee's elbow lets him down in the PV and JT

When you look at all the other 400m times last night, Eaton's 46.70 looks absolutely outstanding in the conditions.

The heptathlon is next Friday/Saturday - not the smartest idea for the usatf site to merely use the days rather than the dates when the trials run over two weekends.

Bryan Clay OUT after a DQ in the hurdles...

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/06/ ... 9620120623

Ashton Eaton well down on his PBs in the hurdles (13.70 today) and discus (42.81). I think he can forget the US record for now. Hardee (13.71 and 49.05) has reduced the gap slightly.

Eaton's at it again! Clear first time at 5.20 in the pole vault for another PB (previous best 5.15).

Hardee clear at 5.00, two failures so far at 5.20.

Eaton clear third time at 5.30.

If he throws 56.00 in the javelin (PB is 57.23) and runs 4:21 in the 1500m (PB is 4:18.94), he'll finish with 8,951 points... 60 points clear of Dan O'Brien's US record and third best of all time.

I thought his PB in the javelin was just over 60m. He'll be there or there abouts with the US record but conditions may have just been against him for the world record. You never know though!

Good point, Geoff - IAAF lists his PB as 57.23, but Wikipedia says he threw 60.26 in April at Stanford. Wouldn't be the first time the IAAF has failed to update someone's PB...

[EDIT: It looks like a strong series on that day, too: 57.35m 60.26m 59.46m FOUL PASS PASS]

In the unlikely event that he exactly matches his PBs of 60.26 and 4:18.94... he'll have 9,029, 3pts more than Sebrle.

Update: 58.87 in the javelin - not a PB, but his best throw in a decathlon. The magic number for a WR is apparently 4:16.93 in the 1500m, although my calculations suggest he might need to be very slightly faster than that. (4:36 will be enough for a US record.)

Interesting to compare Eaton's WR with the previous WR of Sebrle

9039 Ashton Eaton USA 21/01/1988 23/06/2012
( 10.21/0.4 - 8.23/0.8 - 14.20 - 2.05 - 46.70 / 13.70/-0.8 - 42.81 - 5.30 - 58.87 - 4:14.48 )

9026 Roman Šebrle CZE 26/11/1974 27/05/2001
( 10.64/0.0 - 8.11/1.9 - 15.33 - 2.12 - 47.79 / 13.92/-0.2 - 47.92 - 4.80 - 70.16 - 4:21.98 )

Hardee survived the 'elbow events' doing 5.00 PV & 57.00 JT and so scored a 'respectable' 8383, if not respectable for him

The final results show that Clay wasn't disq in 110H (well he was for hand pushing a hurdle, and then reinstated) but did fail to register a DT distance, trying so hard but not knowing at that stage that his 110H time would count after all

12th Bryan Clay 7092

CORRECTION in our entry Jun 23, 2012 9:58 am, where we suggested Eaton's pb 1500 of 4.18.94 scored 891pts. It should have been 820pts

With his 4 new pbs in the USA Trials his total for the 10pbs is now 9341

Ashton Eaton, USA, '88, 1.85, 86kg, DEC PB 9039 WR
pbs 10.21, 8.23, 14.74, 2.11, 45.68, 13.35, 47.36, 5.30, 60.26, 4.14.48

Eaton's 9039 WR
day 1 4728 ie 124pts up on his day 1 score in his prev DEC PB of 8729
day 2 9039 ie 310pts up on his day 2 score in his prev DEC PB of 8729
ie he added 186pts to his day 2 score
His day 2 is seen as weaker than his day 1, so he's been moving in the right direction with his training

His 400 was a whole 1.02 s down on his pb (his 2 other 400s this year have been 45.68, 45.87). Did that reflect a tiring day or the weather?? Perhaps a bit of both, but still his 6th best

His 110h was also a bit down (13.70-0.8) & his worse of the 4 outings this year (pb 13.34 '12) & he did 13.35, 13.52 & 13.52 again in '11, but still his 8th best

All his throws were satisfactory, SP 7th best, DT 6th best, JT 2nd best; HJ 6th= best

Will he do even better in Ldn? But London weather ...
---
Hardee PB 8790, in the trials 8383

How should he feel?
- unlikely to beat Eaton in London
- can he however get back to his 8790 form

pbs 10.39, 7.88, 15.94, 2.06, 47.51, 13.61, 52.68, 5.30, 68.99, 4.42.23
------1001, 1030, 848, 859, 933, 1025, 926, 1004, 874, 666 = 9166
trials:
10.50+0.4, 7.55+1.0, 15.72, 1.99, 49.11//13.71-0.8, 49.05, 5.00, 57.00, 5.08.67
--- 7th best, 10+, 2nd best, 10+, 10+ // 3rd best, 5th, 10th+, 9th, ---- 10+ = 8383

day 1 4406 (1st day PR 4553) ie 147pts down
day 2 8383: 407 down

Eugene weather + elbow fear, but can he retrieve 407pts to = his PB in LDN??

More spin off re Eaton's 9029 DEC WR

Interesting to see the 2 athletes who 'accompanied' Eaton in the 1500:
- Ashton Eaton, '88, 9039, PB 4.14.48, PB,
- Joe Detmer, '83 7931, 4.14.77, PBs: 8090 '10, 4.05.31 '08
- Curti Beach, '90 7109, 4.14.96, PBs: 7764 '12, 3.59.13 '11

He needed 4.16.23 to beat Sebrle's WR, His PB was previously 4.18.94, '11

Old US rec Dan O'Brien, '66, 84kg, 1.86m, 8891, '92
10.43/2.1 - 8.08/1.8 - 16.69 - 2.07 - 48.51 / 13.98/-0.5 - 48.56 - 5.00 - 62.58 - 4:42.10
992 ---------- 1081 --- 894 --- 868 -- 885 = 4720 day 1
This placed him 3rd on the all-time world rankings behind the 2 CZE athletes Sebrle (9026 '01) & Dvorak (8994 '99)

His pbs: 10.23, 8.08, 16.69, 2.20, 46.53// 13.47, 52.71, 5.20, 66.90, 4.37.50
points: 1040, 1081, 894, 992, 982/ 1044, 927, 972, 842, 696 = 9470 (cf Eaton 9341)

O'Brien's top DECs: 8891, 8824, 8817, 8812, 8755, 8726
Next 8715, 29jul94, where he did his 1st day WR score
10.49/-0.3 - 7.81/1.4 - 15.70 - 2.20 - 47.73 / 13.81/0.6 - 48.10 - 4.90 - 62.20 - 5:10.94
977 ----------- 1012 ---- 833 --- 992 -- 922 = 4736

8pts, not 10pts as suggested, up on Eaton's 1st day score of 4728 in his 9039

As well as Zahra Bouras. Excellent news, hoping for a big scoop like the one with Soboleva and co in 2008, and even better if it's declared after entry forms for London deadline so those nations can't substitute. And no finding out dopers doesn't harm the sport!
