Blackmail and Extortion

Postby Geoff » Fri Jun 01, 2012 10:24 am

I thought this was a rather worrying development in the murky world of doping:

Belarus team chief arrested

The KGB in Belarus has arrested Anatoly Baduev, the head coach of the national track and field team, following allegations that some of the country’s top athletes have been blackmailed over positive doping test results.

One of Belarus’ leading publications, Pressball, has recently written how an athletics official demanded up to £1300 ”to bury positive doping test results from a Moscow lab”. Baduev has been alleged to have committed two offences: extortion and misspending sponsorship funds.

This was the head coach of their track & field team. Who are the athletes? Absolutely nothing surprises me anymore but for a head coach to alegedly blackmail his athletes seems an extreme case. Mind you, wait until the bookies start threatening to intimidate Olympic athletes and/or their families unless they no jump in round 3 or lead through 400m in a 5000m or 'accidently trip up a couple of Kenyans/Ethiopians or ....... use your imagination!
