Rio Stadium

Postby boysen » Mon Sep 03, 2012 1:19 pm

A photo of the Maracana Stadium, in Rio, has come to my attention. It was the scene of a Frank Sinatra concert in 1980 and boasted an attendance of 175,000!!! If its still used will it be the site of the 2016 Games? Just perhaps tickets may be more freely available!

Presumably there were a significant amount of people standing on the infield at a concert, so over all capacity for a track meet won't be so high

As far as I am aware the Maracana is being used for the Opening Ceremony in 2016 and (I think!) the Closing Ceremony and some football. The athletics events will be in a smaller stadium. Apparently, the organisers don't think they'll come close to filling the Maracana for athletics.

All depends on the prices of the tickets. If they are anything like what ours were, I doubt they'll need a huge stadium!
Not sure, but I doubt there are as many wealthy people in Brazil as there are in London.

Rio Olympic Games 2016: What to expect

........The Maracanã district houses the Maracanã Stadium, the site of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and some football matches. With a capacity of 90,000, the stadium can hold 10,000 more people than the main arena in the Olympic Park in London. The marathon and archery competitions will take place at the Sambódromo Stadium and the track and field athletic events will be held in the João Havelange Stadium, which is having its capacity permanently increased from 45,000 to 60,000 for the Games.
