Womens 1500m- my worries

Postby paulouk83 » Thu Jul 12, 2012 2:58 pm

The womens 1500m has been one of the most exciting events at the last few champs and bought a silver for Hannah England and Lisa Dorbriskey.

In 2005 this was the top 4
1. Tatyana Tomashova 4:00.35 (SB)
2. Olga Yegorova 4:01.46
3. Bouchra Ghézielle 4:02.45
4. Yelena Soboleva 4:02.48
all went on to be banned

of course in 2003 Hayley Tullet took Bronze behind Cakir esque Süreyya Ayhan who also won the 2002 euros and Tomoshova!

in 2012
Mariem Alaoui Selsouli leads the rankings she was banned and as has been discussed so has european champion who follows in Ayhan's footsteps with her tactics Asli Çakir Alptekin.

Tatyana Tomashova has made the russian team after returning from her very public ban (no shame!) as has Elena Soboleva who hasnt made the team!

Anyway I just things its a shame if the race goes back to how it was 2002-2006 Dehiba isnt showing form thank goodnes.. but the womens 1500m just feels such a tainted events! I will feel very sorry for the talented brits.

In defence of Kostetskaya's improvement, she has only recently moved up to 1500m from 800m and before that 400mH (former World Junior champion).

actually i have no right to put Kostertskaya or Martynova in my post i do try not to tarnish a nation.

Anyway I for one will not be happy if I watch Tomoshova battling with Selousi and Cakir for the gold in London!

I think I'm one of many who are with you on that.

Add me to the list: my stomach isn't strong enough for that nightmare scenario.

The 1500m is such a tactical event that the fast times on the circuit don't always translate into medals. I think our girls will need to be in 3.59 shape to challenge for a medal, we know Lisa is capable of that and Hannah isn't too far off.

I think the 3 medals will be won by those running 3.56.5 to 3.58.5.

We have an excellent track record in this event at the major champs

2004

Kelly Holmes (olympic gold)

2006

Lisa D (commonwealth gold) Hally Tullet (Bronze)

2008

Lisa D (4th in olympics)

2009

Lisa D( world silver)

2010

Lisa D (4th european champs)
Steph Twell (commonwealth bronze)

2011

Hannah England (world silver)

2012
?

So thats at least a top 4 finish in every major champs in recent times (except 2007).

With the vast majority being Lisa D - she's still our best hope for a Top 4 finish, IMO

For the past couple of Olympics the powers that be have done a really good job of catching some of the most obvious drug cheats just before the games begun.

With 4 being exposed in the last week (2 yesterday!!!) It looks as if the same is happening this time as well.

The IOC don't want the likes of Selsouli ruining the games by winning when they know full well they are gooing to get busted sooner or later. It's been a long time since I've seen an athlete make such an ostentatious display or drug taking.

This will be surely be the most stringent olympics ever in terms of drug testing. Lets hope they either catch the cheats before the games being or soon after.
