Re: "Current" Olympic qualifiers

Postby Geoff » Wed May 23, 2012 10:21 am

Thanks for this.

A couple of corrections. Carl Myerscough's shot was done in February before the UKA current period. I think the two male marathon runners Lee Lerrien and Dave Webb should be added. Looks a bit bare at the moment but should fill up in the next couple of weeks and, of course, we have a load of A & B marks from last year plus top 8 finishes etc as per the criteria.

At the end of the day will anyone who is eligible to go, unless 3 places filled, be left at home?

Thanks Geoff. I forgot that Dave Webb's top 20 place in Daegu counted as an 'A' and obviously misread the date on Carl's shot mark.

Yep, plenty of 'A's from last year and this year's indoor season. Current standards do seem to be emphasised though, so to make the list manageable I'm sticking to those for now!

Just a really odd stat. I was looking at the distance running standards and it seems that in Olympic year only 2 UK performances have ever been recorded at under 27.45 for the 10,000. One was Keska at the games themselves and the other is Farah in 2008 and he didn't elect to run 10,000 at the games itself. So it seems that we have never had anybody actually go to the games on the back of a sub 27.45 inside the "current" qualifying terms. I think that is quite remarkable.

I'll try to put tgther the list of those with the "non-current" qualification standards, as obviously these won't change this year that part will be definitive.

I'm going to add last year's and the winter's 'A' qualifiers as well fangio. I just wanted to get this list up first. Of course, with the longer period for 10,000, etc some of them are on there already.

Very competative in the B Lists, especially the 400s Rooney and TBO look like they are on track but it could be a right scrap for the 2nd and third spots. At least there is some depth relay wise!

As an aside - Abi O is only officially on 23.15 but her wind aided 22.5 really puts her back up there, must give others who have had terrible luck with injuries (Sanders etc) some hope that even after 8 years of struggle you can find 'it' again!

Is there a reason that everyone is pointedly ignoring Laura Turner's A-Standard from earlier in the season? Also, does anyone know when Jeanette Kwakye starts her season?

Yes - because she ran in a mixed race (which also has no wind indicated) - so can't count

No idea about Kwayke (or Jodie for that matter...)

Usedtoit33, is there any chance of an update? Would love to see how each event is shaping up, especially with so many A Standards achieved in the last 7-10 days...

One question that's been on my mind. Does the reigning Olympic champion get a bye? Or does that only happen in the Worlds? I wondered whether (in the Women's 400m), TBO was automatic, meaning we could have 4 athletes in the event if Cox, McConnell and Sanders managed the A Standard? Memories from childhood of USA and Kenya having 4 athletes in a single event at a major championships..

There've been so many good results I haven't kept up! Which is wonderful. :D Should have an update for ye tomorrow.

Sadly, Olympic champs don't get a bye. That only happens in the worlds.

Any event where an athlete is selected for the GB team with an "A" qualification cannot be accompanied by a "B" standard. B standards may be selected in an event on their own.

I think everyone is aware of this.

It's not a list of everyone who will be in the team, it's just a list of those with each of the standards.

In terms of that policy, I see that 10,000m, combined events, walks and marathon are excluded from the Trials requirements, and that to be available for the discretionary selection you have to take part in that event at the Trials (plus have the relevant standard time / distance / height).

I know Mo is focussing on the 10,000m, but how does he get selected for the 5,000m on the criteria above? Does he need special authority from the Head Coach, and perhaps that's why he's doing the 1500m at the Trials (to at least show his face as part of "the team"?)

Absolutely. Not only does Clause 4 b clarify that for the 10K there is no Trials event and there is no compunction on competing, therefore, but, in addition, the general rule about competing in the event you wish to be selected for can be explicitly ignored if the Head Coach grants specific permission to do so; clearly the case for Mo.

Re: "Current" Olympic qualifiers - updated 8.6.12

So does the Head Coach's decision about this get publicly declared anywhere? Seems a little unfair to expect some athletes to peak for a certain date / time to bag their spot with others being given a bye on the basis of other form / reputation. If we were fortunate enough to have 4 Olympic A standard athletes in a given event, it would certainly be unfair for any one of them to be given a bye based on perhaps a perception that one is better than the other three.

Don't get me wrong, in Mo's case this is clearly the right thing to do, and I give him credit for taking a race on at the Trials, it just seems a little unfair to have some arbitrary alternative position available to "superstars" particularly where the regulations say that the discretion will only be offered in "exceptional" circumstances. What are Mo's "exceptional" circumstances other than running a competitive 5k isn't part of Salazar's build up plan for London?

Larkim, here is a news item from UKA about Mo running the 1500.

Thanks, yes I'd read that. That's why I posted actually, as that article doesn't talk about the 1500m being in lieu of taking part in the 5000m nor does it mention that he's been granted "exceptional" status to not have to compete in the 5000m trials.

As I say, no beef about this in practice - it seems perfectly sensible that athletes should be allowed to develop and train in the way that will make them at their best for the Olympics, and in the case of someone like Mo who has a real chance of getting gold all the stops should be pulled out to ensure that he has the best chance. It just seems a little unfair that other athletes whose training schedules may not be "perfect" by having to compete hard in the trials are potentially disadvantaged when other candidates who are a "shoe-in" are given a get-out without an "exceptional" circumstance being needed.

Or are you saying that as Mo is taking part in a middle distance "discipline" event then that participation qualifies him for the 5000m? (I don't think you are saying this, btw)

Amusing confusion.

Original draft of article on AW published today (seen via the RSS feed):-
If Danvers does make the trials, though, and achieves the B standard (56.65), then UKA could potentially give her the third discretionary place in the team.

Current draft of article on the AW website:-
If Danvers does make the trials, though, and finishes outside the top two but achieves the A standard (55.50), then UKA could potentially give her the third discretionary place in the team.

Good to see the editing getting this right in the end, but amusing that an AW staff writer doesn't know the IAAF qualification rules on A and B standards!

Am I getting confused or has there been a change here? Is it sometimes the case that you can take two A's and a B?

I'd wondered, from the IAAF perspective, what if there was a catastrophic fall (or unexpected rise) in performance which led to too few or too many athletes making the games? I know they tweaked the criteria in November last year, but there's always the possibility, perhaps in the field events more than on the track, that some new "technique" could come along (cf. Fosbury) which could skew the standards for a particular year.

(And before I get jumped on, I know that the Flop wasn't mastered by all instantly and took quite a while before it became the ubiquitous way to high jump)

At the Worlds yes, at the Olympics it's either 1 B standard, or 1-3 A standards

It would be inconceivable that CVC would bar Mo from running in an alternative to the 5K, especially based on the facts of his WC Gold and his outstanding performance a few weeks ago; which Brits would he be denying a place ? . The first two in the Trials in the 5K, if having the requisite times under Clauses 8/9, will be automatically selected anyway, plus Mo as third choice; it isn't as if we had 3 or 4 guys all pushing 13 mins to 13.05mins.
