London 2012 Olympics: Jessica Ennis changes javelin technique in hunt for heptathlon gold
Jessica Ennis is hopeful there will be no repeat of her World Championship meltdown in the javelin at this summer’s Olympics following an overhaul of her technique that already appears to be paying dividends.

Competing at a low-key meeting at RAF Cosford last Saturday, Ennis began her outdoor campaign with a javelin throw of 45.66 metres — her best ever season-opening throw and longer than she managed in the whole of 2011, when she failed to beat the 45m mark.

Her performance has given her confidence that the Olympics will not be blighted by the inconsistency that cost her the gold medal in Daegu last September when her best effort in the javelin was 39.95m.

That experience prompted a rethink of her run-up technique and she has spent the past six months working intensively with her specialist javelin coach, former world bronze medallist Mick Hill, to iron out the problems.

“We’ve been working really hard on the rhythm of my runway to get myself comfortable with that,” Ennis said. “And then just a few other things — really small things which, if you get them right, can make a big difference.

“I didn’t want to throw as badly as I did in Daegu again. I think it is mainly about making it really solid and consistent. I need to be throwing 45m minimum, so to start the season with a 45 was promising. I just need to build on it now.”

Then tell us something about them! Links to news stories is all that's been put up (an odd result here or there aside) - Kelly hasn't got much press from what I've seen, so it's little surprise tbh

In fact, I actually think it would be good for her to simply let her performance do the talking, ahead of her big comeback. I'd love to see her succeed, but in reality it will be tough and adding more pressure by talking about expectations based on very little might well work against her

Jess doesn't think she's the favourite but i'm not so sure. I think she has the beating of Dobby 9 times out of ten and Chernova is so inconsistent we have no idea which one is going to turn up.

Being British of course I hope JE wins in Ldn, but the 1 out of 10 could occur in Ldn. Dobrynska won in Beijing and is now emerging in thd OLY year; I would never dismiss her chances. With her physique and her ability to rise to the occasion she is a lethal opponent, whatever failings she has shown between Olympics.

Chernova is variable but I think a new Chernova has appeared in the last year so again I will not dismiss her.

End-of-May Gotzis may, or may not, give a few pointers as to how LDN might turn out.

That's great news. Looking forward to seeing how she gets on.

All our contending heptathletes (I admit that there are 4 I have in mind) seem to be hugely impressive individuals.
If they all stay fit, this will be one battle royale to light up the summer.

To mention one of the others... I attempted Hazel's "2 minute abs" routine (check it out on you-tube) a while back.
The following day I felt like my middle was being slowly cut in half by a blunt hacksaw.
...But in a good way.

(Anyone else had that problem after going back to ab exercises too vigourously after a long break?! Ouch.)

Not exactly Brazilian weather so perhaps saving themselves for another day! Kelly says she will try again at the European Champs but isn't there a qualifying standard which, of course, she does not have? Any news on her injury or did she pull out as a precaution?

Hope I have extracted the appropriate items from the 6pps pdf file of UKA

Helsinki selection policy

- Selection will be announced 18jun
- no trials
- Athletes must achieve the applicable European Athletics Standards
- qualifying period 1jan11-17jun12
- HEP 5920
- many comments re clash with OLY ..

Lets hope Kelly can get her head, her body and her tongue round it all.

It has become very unlikely now for Kelly to compete in the London Olympics.
Whilst that would seem a great shame on the surface, it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
I wouldn't want to see a great athlete such as she struggling to overcome injuries and just make up the numbers.
I'd rather remember her athletics career as a top line performer.

On the credit side I'm fairly sure the media would be lining up to sign her up as a pundit. And I'd love to see her in that role. After all she has never been shy in coming forward with an opinion.
Maybe its time for her to give her body a rest, and instead get paid to talk.

You may well be right re athletic performance.

On the pundit side I'm not so sure. I'd like to see a little more thoughtfulness from her before she speaks out, but perhaps she will improve; I hope so.

I am more curious about Loise Hazel's future actually. 4 going for 3 places and her ending up No.4, but perhaps not. The GBR HEP list is interestingly lively with possibilities at the moment, not only with how our No.1 will do but which 2 others join her in Ldn, if indeed they do. Yes I hope we have 3 participants in the event.

It occurs to me that had she not been a multi-eventer she would have been the worlds best 400 hurdler.
