'70th American over 8k.'

It's a frightening statistic, isn't it? UK All Time list in comparison? 3. Daley, Dean, Alex Kruger. Last one? Macey's 8160 something in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. I watched our latest Dec hope Dan Awde last year at Bedford achieve 7869 (he went twenty points better a month later in Italy to set his current p.b.) and he did indeed look better than anyone else we have at the moment. Then looked-up the NCAA finals a little later in the summer and saw that his p.b. score would have put him ....... thirteenth.

As someone said on another thread, in Dec we haven't even anyone on the horizon of a medal at the moment and that's said after admitting I'm looking forward to see what Martin Brockman and Ben Hazell have been up to over the winter (they should be at Millfield at the end of this month so I'll be able to watch them then). I have a lot of time for Ashley Bryant, enjoyed watching Ben Gregory set a new indoor mark in Cardiff recently and relish seeing what Jack Andrew and Liam Ramsey can achieve on their returns from injury. But where are the 8k performers and why do we have to subsist on expectations of this latest young generations' potential for the future rather than be able to watch our twenty-three to twenty-eight year old decathletes score better?

Meh. I'm just 'bumpin' me gums' as you've put up a new thread :)

I used to coach GB decathletes and can offer a few reasons why we haven't got world class decathletes at the moment.
1. It's time consuming for both athlete and coach.
2. It's expensive for both athlete and coach.
3. There is always pressure to specialise too early.
4. Lack of good technical coaches at club level and very limited run, jump, throw in many clubs.
5. Media focus on the track rather than the field.
6. General lack of senior male athletes.
7. Not attracting the right type of athlete.
8. Unwillingness to take more time to develop - needs patience.

We used to have a great base of decathletes with around a 100 over 5000 points but that base has diminished to about 30 or so. We used to have top juniors and senior internationals in individual events trying decathlon but that raely happens anymore.

Like all other events we don't seem to have any sort of event development plan to promote decathlon and develop athletes from club level to elite.

I'm hopeful we will see one or two British decathletes over 8000 points this year but we need bigger, more powerful men to take up the event in the future. Perhaps some of the sprinters but they don't even long jump any more!

PS There are probably lots of other reasons and no doubt others will post them!

No, not a case of 'bumping gums or 'flapping lips' (had to look your phrase up; am I running fast enough to keep up with our evolving English language).

DEC isn't the only even bewailed over in GBR - eg marathon. Let us hope that if nothing else all our top DEC men make PBs this year and so satisfaction for them, even if not OLY level stuff.

Geoff
You observations are pertinent but really overall our society is changing, and there maybe a chance to excel for a few professional athletes, them being supported financially, and by a few others who excel inspite of the system. There is a social malaise affecting club athletics, so something dramatic has got to happen to prompt a change from how young people see 'serious' sport these days. and at the coach level are new volunteers flooding in? I doubt it but I have no hard figures to hand to support that guess.

Whatever excellent systems might be produced by the Governing Bodies that prop things up, in part, it is society that decides, or something like that.

If the OLY W HEP is going to be very interesting, then so is the M DEC, if the throwing elbow of World champion Trey Hardee takes the pressure.

A complete washout on the second day as the event was abandoned. Many other track & field meets were also called off as our season got under way!

Yep. Saturday was quite blustery and cold but reasonably dry however Sunday saw gale-force winds, driving rain and cold again. Richard and the other organisers had no real choice but to call things off for the safety of competitors and officials.
Certainly makes the investments made by the throwers and runners who went to the sunny States these last few weeks show a handsome return.
