2012 World Ranking list ramblings

Postby d pickup » Wed Feb 01, 2012 11:12 am

Each week we'll look at the 2012 world ranking lists and perhaps be prompted to make comments on new leaders and whatever.

Ranking lists aren't the full story of our sport, but most of the best top them. We'll do a bit of delving and see:

1 how many '11 World Champs topped the lists & comment on the exceptions

2 how many '08 OLY gold topped the lists & comment on the exceptions

3 how many who top the lists will gold in Ldn OLY? We'll see, & nearer the time finally predict possible golds.

Please do join in - if so prompted.

§§§

MEN
Daegu ranking
winner 2011

100 Blake 5
- No.1 Bolt, and 99% of us would have predicted him for gold - if he hadn't false started; what will his nerves be like, if he makes the Ldn OLY 100 final?!

200 Bolt 2
- No.1 Blake, a late-season revelation, though Bolt, for 2011, did want to do only what was necessary to win

Big 100/200 questions: will Blake have the measure of Bolt in 2012? Have we seen the best of Bolt or will more emerge?

400 James 2
- No.1 ex-druggie Merritt 2nd in Daegu

800 Rudisha 1
-

1.5k Kiprop 1
-

5k Farah 1
-

10k Jeilan 18, on the day won by a surprise whisker
- No.1 & WR holder Bekele DNF, and topped the list late in the season; he was emerging from injury

MAR Kirui 42: wins Championships: 1st Berlin too ('09)
- No. 1, new WR holder Makau, is 3-years new to the event

110H Richardson 4: gold on the day; a rising star
- No.1 RObles crossed the line 1st in Daegu (but disqualified), and Xiang (ranked 2nd) might have been 1st if not impeded ..

400H Greene 7
- No.1 Zyl 3rd in Daegu

StCh Kemboi 2
- No.1 Kiproto 2nd in Daegu

20kW Borchin 4
- No.1 Zhen 4th in Daegu

50kW Bakulin 1
-

400r JAM 1
-

- No.1 Kovago 15th in Daegu so not even in the final

Thank you. Now 08 OLY and my mind wonders about Athens and Sydney. A bit of work but might be interesting, even illuminating; we'll see.

A quick whizz thru the men, pick up, tells us that nearly every OG Gold medal winner in 2008 was also the top ranked athlete that year, as selected by the Peter Matthews/Mel Watman group and shown in the the ATFS Annual; Bolt,Bolt,Merritt,, Bekele, Bekele,,Robles,Taylor,Silnov,Saladino,Evora,Majewski,Kanter,Kozmus,Thorkildsen. Probably the same or thereabouts by Track and Field News rankings.

readtherules, I think you confused Kozmus with the two Belarussians who got DQed then reinstated.
Kozmus finished ahead of them anyway.

2011 marathon list showa as follows
Overall 251
Merrien 625
Lemoncello 743
Wicks 763
Webb 783
Whitby 869
Ford 974
Without wishing to be unkind is this our "poorest/weakest" event?
Of course no other event carries the weight of Kenyans but there it is.

I get the impression that ETH is improving its depth in distance running too, though I haven't checked it out.

So on a brighter note which event is our strongest one world-wide? You have mara figures but don't quote a source. Are other events similarly covered? A bit of weekend work for somebody!!

Sadly not. Of course one needs a set of parameters before declaring best or worst. Should it be top 10. 50 or 100? I am inclined to W800 (top 100) but have no stats beyond 50 at the moment. Note 4 GB girls in top 40.

I suspect in terms of numbers of athletes in the top 1000 and their positions, I suspect yes. However, it may be the case that if you rated countries by adding up scores (1000 for 1st down to 1 for 1000th) and then ranked them by that score and then did the same for every event* that there may be other events where a greater number of countries rank above us. I hope that makes sense!

* I'm not sure rankings that deep are actually compiled by anybody for other events.

You might enjoy a Swedish site, in English, by Peter Larsson

For instance he lists 1977 men in the Men's MAR, down to 2.10.29; the list is performances ie some will have more than 1 performance in the list.

Where the top ranked finished in the Championships

'00 Oly
M 1(8), 222, 333, 44, 5, 666, 10, DNF(1), not in event(2) --- 24 events
W 1(7), 2222, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 19 DNF(2), not in event(2) --- 22 events

'04 Oly
M 1(13) 22222, 5, 6, not in event(4) --- 24 events
W 1(12) 2, 333, 4, 5, 12, 14, DNF, not in event(1) --- 22 events

'08 Oly
M 1(15) 33, F(no mark), SF, ht, not in event(4) --- 24 events
W 1(15) 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 31, DNF, not in event(1) --- 23 events

'09 world
M 1(18) 33, 5, 9, 10, 7sf, DNFsf, not in event(1) --- 24 events (25 here: 2= top HJ)
W 1(14) 2, 33, 28, no mark final, DNF ht, not in event(3) --- 23 events

'11 world
M 1(9) 2222222 3 4, 15, DNF, DSQ F(2), not in event(2) --- 24 events
W 1(14) 22, 33, 44, 6, 10, 11, not in event(1) --- 23 events (24 here: 2= top TJ)

§§§

Observations
- this data only covers 5 Comps
- top ranked M & W do equally well, give or take
- 'strange' things happen in some events eg MAR very low ranked athletes win
- there is a small if significant % of top rankers who do not make the final of their event

'12 Oly
- it will be about 'normal' if about 60% of the top-ranked athletes take OLY gold
