Re: European U20 Championships 2013

The following athletes have gained automatic selection for the U20 Champs. No one is going to be selected for more than one age group championship, so the U18 athletes on that list are - I would think - more likely to go to the U18 worlds. And didn't Gorcka secure automatic selection by winning the...

Presumably she'll be in Rieti, the European Juniors start on the 18th If she wants to be in Rieti in July won't she have to compete at the trials this weekend, though? If the entry lists available online are correct and up to date she won't be. ETA: She's on the list now. It probably just wasn't up...

Judd doesn't appear on the entry lists for the England Athletics U23 & U20 Championships & European Trials. Might she be injured?

Lynsey Sharp will be running in Oslo on thursday, but that's too late for the result to affect Euro Cup selection.

Re: Manchester Citygames

Her 800m success if based on strength not speed, i'm sure she'll improve over 400m but you can't be world class 800m runner if your pb is 56 sec. That pb is from the only 400m race she ran (and won) in 2012. At a National Junior Athletic League Southern Premier Division match held in April in wet a...

Re: Manchester Citygames

around June 2012 you might have said the same thing about our 800m womens depth; Okoro, Sharp, Meadows, Jackson were all talked of in the same way. :( There was strength in depth in 2012 also. Three athletes should have been selected - and no doubt would have been if not for Meadows' injury problems.

I've seen those tweets as well, but I think she was already second on the U20 all time list before tonight.

It looks like it may be the fastest time ever in a BMC race, though. Is there any chance videos of tonight's races will show up on the net?

An impressive PB by Hayley McLean.

She was terribly unlucky to not get selected for the WJC last year. I'm happy that doesn't seem to have deterred her.

Re: Athletes on the move

Nike don't do losers, so any deal with them carries with it at least a degree of belief and expectation of success. That said, to believe this deal is based purely on athletic potential / past success is clearly - some would say sadly - ridiculous. She was the fastest British female 800m runner in ...

I thought it would be interesting to compare WC standards v CWG standards (comparison here http://bit.ly/Zo7U6a) and it's madness. Even allowing for Caribbean and African dominance across certain events in the CWG, how can more challenging standards be justified? The standards aren't really more ch...

Re: CWG - England Athletics quali standards

To be fair, the standards were published as part of the selection policy and it can only be understood as a whole. Seen in that context it seems clear the real standard here is "top 8 potential". If the panel thinks you've got that then they'll consider you. The A and B standards only dete...

What about Chris O'Hare, then? He wouldn't be at the back. Apparently Eriksson claims he didn't know before the selection meeting that O'Hare wanted to be considered. I understand the top 8 potential being the reason to choose somebody, but why take empty spaces instead of athletes? Does Peter Eriksson honestly think Chambers will finish in the top 8 in Moscow? Because he's got the standard the test becomes "likely top 6 in Göteborg". I'm not sure he i...

I understand the top 8 potential being the reason to choose somebody I've got no problem with that at all, but it seems too strict. The only way for someone to get selected without the "top six with UKA qualifying standard" requirement is if the head coach thinks they've get clear top 8 p...

Re: Goteborg Team

Yes, Warburton with his DQ at the trials and Grice less than 1/10 second from automatic selection. But for both I think it is possible for reasonable person (or panel) to judge that they're not likely to get in the top six. The problem is having that strict a requirement in the first place, of course.

Re: Goteborg Team

I've re-read the selection policy and it seems the only way of being selected without having the (excessively difficult) standard is if you've got " clear potential (in the Head Coach’s opinion) to finish in the top eight at the Moscow World Championships ." So he must feel Howarth has cle...

Re: Goteborg Team

Chuffed as I am to see Howarth going, on what grounds can they justify the exclusion of Warburton and Grice if she is picked?! I can't think of any good reason. Unless they were given the option and declined, but that seems unlikely. Picking Howarth was definitely the right thing to do, but it only...
