Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

I know what you mean, but I don't see it as necessarily an athlete-only thing. I would assume (and i know this would be the case in my experience) that clubs would step up and work on behalf of the athlete to support them. There's also local council funding, AAA grants, RPMF and so on that they coul...

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

Depends what you mean by couldn't afford. My sons school had a expedition they were offering to Cambodia. £3000 but the kids had to raise the money themselves through sponsorship. Anyone could do that. It isn't discriminatory. Actually they were against the parents contributing.

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

It's interesting that AW doesn't seem to have weighed in on this issue. Andy Vernon's twitter account obviously more newsworthy.

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

As I've suggested before 1) Allow eligible athletes to self-fund to the competition if the NGB has not filled the spot already 2) Fundraisers for athletes will hit the press and highlight when the NGB is acting against the interest of both public and athlete From the IAAF's perspective, they have n...

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

disappointing post. Firstly the comparison with Gymnastics is wholly incorrect; a sport where your body and its flexibility takes a pounding from 6/8 years old bears little ,if any, comparison with Track and Field where the period of major success relates to a wide range of events and can range fro...

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

I find the whole, "let's keep the competition local" stance very odd. I can't imagine any other sport (and I've been involved with a few over the course of my life) where people would argue for a lower level of competition. I can't imagine football coaches arguing that sending a team to th...

Re: "Do we need the women's discus?"

I think TV is the key. I personally have no interest in field events on TV usually, but love to watch them at live events. Why? Because the TV coverage is so fragmented and piecemeal that you don't get the build up of pressure and intensity that happens as field events progress. It wouldn't actually...

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

Dont know if its purely a money issue by B.A. but as a coach to a number youth/ school internationals over the years i would take a different view on this. Given Britians record with youth/junior star athletes not progressing to make decent senior athletes over the years think missing these champs ...

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

I often don't agree with our NGBs on many things, but on this one I agree. I basically see little point in kids competing on a global level. Winning the national schools, and then the schools international should be the pinnacle of our youth. All we do is find out who is the most mature in the worl...

Re: Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

Here is an extract from the first paragraph of the selection policy: Whilst it is important that the GB & NI team are successful at the Junior Championships each year, we also recognise their importance as a learning experience for athletes with future senior medal potential. Clearly not. Maybe ...

Youth Olympic Games 2014 - No British Team

Statement from British Athletics from their selection policy: Youth Olympic Games British Athletics will not be sending a team to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China (or the trials event in Baku, Azerbaijan) – instead choosing to focus solely on the World Juniors. Due to the developmental...

Re: Coaching Masterclass

Hi Malcolm
I tried both the paths you have suggested and am getting nowhere unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestions though. I feel that at grass roots EA needs to do more. Where is the community development programme like they have in football?

Coaching Masterclass

I run a Sprint team of between 10 and 20 sprinters of various ages up to age 20. I've been trying to give them shots of inspiration and we did one brilliant session with Linford Christie that really fired them up, plus we learned a lot from it. Does anyone have any ideas of what else we could do? I'...
