I’ve just checked and only Dave Bedford and Dave Black amongst Brits have run 10,000 faster than Alex Yee whilst in what is now the U23 category. He is also the first new entry in the all-time top 10 since Jon Brown in 1992!

With the odd exception (e.g. Geoff Capes, Arthur Rowe, a surprise 4th in the Melbourne OG DT by Mark Pharoah) our general lack of success at throws and World and European level goes back further than that.

20.73 200m by 18 year old Charlie Dobson at the Essex Champs. Power of 10 show performances for him from age 13 and his progression is quite something as he hadn’t broken 24 as a 15 year old.

It is certainly very tough on the body. However, for me that is a reason to not take it up if you are doing very well in another event rather than a valid excuse to never give it a try in the first place.

Despite the wear and tear element there are quite a few examples of TJers with long careers e.g Edwards, Aldama, Banks (who has set Master’s…[Read more]

Totally agree with that last point. For me, a heck of a lot more long jumpers (plus other sprinting/jumping types) should at least try triple jump. Since the women’s event has become established, I have noticed that the UK hardly ever has a representative at age-group champs, and I think that is largely because a lot of athletes who may have the…[Read more]

For record purposes it was a mixed race, any performances in it would not have been eligible for the womens’ only world record which has to be set in a race with no male pacemakers or other runners.

It is allowable because there are 2 separate record categories – one for women-only races and one for mixed races. Remember that there are still many quite major marathons (particularly in Continental Europe) where there is no separate elite women’s race with its own separate start time. Therefore the elite Women in London were technically in a…[Read more]

Not nice for England to be run out of a 4×4 medal by convicted drug cheat Montsho. :negative:

Bronze for Jake Wightman behind 2 truly world-class Kenyans.

    That didn’t take much typing!

Scottish medal – English father, Welsh mother.

Good throwing by the Chopra, the young Indian, in the JT. While Vetter in particular has been throwing much further, he could be contending for world medals soon.

I was impressed that she didn’t seem to panic. Yes she was likely to loose ground to specialist sprinters but she did what she had to do.

I’ve known it happen at lesser events. May have happened at CGs before with 9 or 10 entries. My local club’s ancient record would have just about got through. There was a spate of DQs in the men’s 4×4 heats in Auckland in 1990 when Scotland got a surprise medal in the final.
