It’s been talked about but it’s never actually happened. I think something might have been done if any of the 1968 Mexico performances had stayed on the books after 1991. Does seem a little illogical that a 100m run at sea level with a +2.1 is ruled out for record and qualifying performances while one done with a +2.0 at twice the altitude of…[Read more]

The rule is that you must wear your club vest or a national, regional or county vest*. It does seem to me that the current internationals are expected to wear their GB kit. Personally I would rather see 2 or 3 athletes battling it out in different club vests rather than identical national ones.

*It must be a vest that you have ‘earnt’ – you…[Read more]

    Bump!

I think the CWG can work quite well as a stepping-stone between age-group champs and the truly major senior champs. On the track it is sometimes superior to the Europeans.

    Bump!

I can remember going to the Cosford Games once in the early 80s. An athlete from my own club was a surprise 200m finalist (he got lane 1! :negative:).

IIRC there was an impressive 1500m win by a young Jack Buckner who most there hadn’t heard of before.

Another memory of Cosford was having to walk to another hangar on the site to spend a penny!

Speed over a shorter distance and a change of pace are not necessarily the same thing but it certainly isn’t a bad thing!

I suspect it may have been settled a while ago that England were going to take a team of x competitors and that would be made up of a certain number in athletics, 32 in swimming etc. The fact that Greg Rutherford’s place has gone to a 400 Hurdler suggests this may be the case to me.

Some countries of course have much laxer ‘rules’ in giving sportspeople passports! Where the IAAF rules are currently strict is that no transfers of allegiance have been allowed recently. I don’t think this would apply to Romell Glave who moved as a child and would have never represented Jamaica. I also wonder whether his age may mean that the 5…[Read more]

Well done to Bobby Clay for her honesty and openness here.

Sadly, I could come up with many names of British female middle and long-distance runners from the last 40 years or so who have produced great performances in their late teens before, I suspect, succumbing to similar problems.

My comparison with Cook was more about relay legs than the 800m itself. I think Rooney will still be able to run a good enough leg to be worth a spot on the team.

As for his 800m potential, I think the best British athletes to compare him with would be Steve Heard and Brian Whittle. Both of these 2 moved up from 400m and ran 1.45 something (I…[Read more]

As athletes tend to start their ‘winter’ training around about now, I assume he is already making changes as we speak.

I know his former club coach at Croydon, Mike Fleet, always says that 800m would be Rooney’s best event. Mike was an 800 international in the early ’60s. While I do think it is unlikely that he becomes a medal contender at…[Read more]

I know that a 7 jump format is sometimes used in Schools competition where time constraints rule out a ‘standard’ competition. I think it may actually be used in the English Schools Cup (a country-wide Inter Schools’ competition). The difference with these is that height options tend to be limited to 5cm intervals, although I think this can be…[Read more]

I think a major issue here is that England Athletics has to submit its team to Commonwealth Games England (CGE) to approve selections before it can be finalised. With the Games being on the other side of the world in a different time zone, I also expect that the team will be traveling out there relatively early to acclimatise. Therefore I…[Read more]

    That is interesting stuff, Ursus.
For what it’s worth here are the corresponding dates for the current World leads-

    mJT 11.7, mHT 27.6, mDT 29.6, mSP 25.6. (all 3 ‘heavy’ throws’ within a 5 day period!)

wJT 6.7, wHT 29.7, wDT 18.7, wSP 28.7. (all in July)

I think these all came within a lead up period of about 6 weeks before the Worlds.

Isn’t it the case that, by and large, the level of funding a sport receives is decided shortly after the Olympics and stays at that level leading up to the next Games? Ultimately, it is how a sport does at the Olympics that seems to be the major criteria for the level of funding, but I do think performance at World Championships may be looked at…[Read more]

Under the criteria they had outlined, BA/UKA had no option but to select Lally. Whether there should be additional caveats before that happens is another question.

I must admit I expected her to throw less than 57.71 B-)

How about 1984? Coe (World Record Holder), Ovett (Olympic Champ) & Elliott (4th in previous year’s WC & PB under 1.44).

I do however think there is a danger in thinking that just because we have had many runners who have run faster than Kyle Langford in the past that there were always, at any one time, 3 athletes who were showing better form…[Read more]

I think the circumstances are so unusual that I don’t think it sets much of a precedent.
