SAm Talbot has said he won’t be competing next year, he needs to give his body a chance to recover. Credit to the guy for sticking with the sport when he could have gone back to rugby

Laps, Coe has talked before about a shortened worlds so I think there is cause for concern. Next years Euro’s follows the same format as last years – in the sprints if you’re ranked in the top 10 you get an automatic bye to the semis. I thought that was something they introduced last year to attract some of the bigger names who may have been put…[Read more]

Where to start?? He’s seems to be moving towards a complete overhaul of the sport rather than just changing things here and there which could potentially throw the baby out with the bathwater. The diamond league…[Read more]

Contenders have been announced today, Barshim and Lasitskene have been very entertaining all year in the HJ if not quite jumping heights that compare to the all time best. I’d go for Thiam and Vetter who both delivered WC golds and set very competitive marks earlier in the season. Manyonga was excellent too

    Men
    Mutaz Essa Barshim (QAT)
    Pawel…[Read more]

I’ve just had a quick look at some of the medalists from the recent European u23 and u20 championships. How good would it be to see some of the following selected:

Edoburun, Rowden, Riley-Laborde, Agyapong, Turner, Lucy Bryan

Lonsdale, Gale, Maya Bruney, Alicia Barrett, Molly Caudery, Ogbeta

Bruney and Agyapong look very promising and deserve a…[Read more]

I feel like we’re going over old ground here, but my point essentially was there’s no logic in highlighting the high points of the 80’s and 90’s without looking at the wider picture. Tokyo 64 – 12 medals, Mexico City 68 – 4 medals, Munich 72 – 4 medals, Montreal 76 – 1 medal, Moscow 1980 – 10 medals and on and on. There’s been a lot of ups and…[Read more]

Philipo you accuse others of playing fast and loose with statistics but you’re refusal to acknowledge the nadir of the early 2000s actually does the same.

I asked you earlier on in the discussion what’s the problem with lottery funding when it’s been so phenomenally successfully for other Olympic sports, can you answer my question please

What’s that based on Steve? To my knowledge the crime rate in Birmingham isn’t any worse than any other major city. Glasgow and East London had a poor reputation in the past but hosted fantastic games where crime wasn’t an issue at all.

I’m not surprised Birmingham got the nod, getting a brand new stadium through the planning process and built in…[Read more]

Things aren’t perfect but they’re certainly not as bad as they were in the early 2000s. From the championships of 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 we won a combined total of 12 medals. We’ve won more than that in the last two championships combined. You can’t pick out the highs whilst ignoring the lows

I’m sure I read somewhere that WvN was planning on doubling up in the 100 and 200 and Omar McLeod is thinking of doing the 200.

I hope we send a strong team to the world indoors and that some of our athletes who don’t usually compete indoors decide to do so. Perhaps Hudson-Smith could be persuaded to compete in his home city. The standards are…[Read more]

Murrays win in 2015 was undeserved IMO, he hadn’t done much in the majors that year and won it solely because of his performances in the Davis Cup, don’t get me wrong it was a fine achievement but the competition lacks validity if one world class player can be entered in 3 rubbers and therefore has the possibility to win it single handed. His…[Read more]

I’m not sure what to make of Laviai Nielson’s season, she ran 52.80 the other night.

Her 3 fastest times came indoors, she ran the best leg of our relay runners in London – 50.4 and backed it with 51.0 in the final but failed to make the final at the trials. Her outdoor PB dates back to 2015. I do think she’s talented, but she’s worryingly…[Read more]

I know it’s a regular gripe of yours that modern athletes are pampered by the lottery system and underperform because there’s less of an imperative to strive for medals, how do you explain the incredible improvement in other Olympic sports since 96?

If you’re going to hold up the class of 93 as a shining example of how it should be done can you…[Read more]

I’m starting to think Shaunae Miller is better over the 200. To run like that after after doubling up at the WCs was very impressive. I can understand why she treats it as her second event, over the last few years other than Felix there’s been very little competition over the quarter mile. I think if she focused on it solely she’d have the beating…[Read more]

There seems to be one group who criticise him for not running times that compare with the all time best and another group who think he’s tainted by association. Logic dictates that if he were doping he’d be much more likely to be amongst the quickest of all time.

Salazar is by no means squeaky clean but most of his other athletes haven’t…[Read more]
