The timetable has been published for the 2019 European Indoor Champs in Glasgow – https://glasgow2019athletics.com/championships/schedule/

That they’re ending the Day 1 evening session with the Women’s 3000 Final (straight final) suggests to me that Laura Muir has said to them that she intends to do the 3000.

However, with heats of the 1500…[Read more]

I did say of Shelayna, “Can she recapture the heights she reached in 2015? I’m not convinced.” Just a different way of saying it I guess, as well as recognising that Lynsey has achieved a fair bit more so the question of Shelayna declining or not seems less pertinent to me.

M 800 – Overall negative – quite shocking that we couldn’t get even one man into the final
    Elliot Giles D
Ran a dumb race in the semis that didn’t play to his strengths. Should have made it hard rather than just leave it to the kickers. Personally, I think the fact he’s very one-paced will limit his future achievements, certainly outdoors when all…[Read more]

I decided to do a ‘Report Card’ for the distances, women first then men. My grades (A+ down to E) are more relative to the athlete themself rather than being relative to world or European standards.
I’d welcome any discussion (agreement or disagreement!) of my grades and comments.

    W 800 – Overall negative – 2 of our 3 weren’t up to scratch
    Adelle…[Read more]

I don’t think anyone has said that, Philipo. But given her performances and results over the last 3 years surely you can’t deny that, if fit, she’ll have a decent chance of a medal. How strong you rate that chance will differ from person to person.

Tomorrow, Wed 15th, the Manchester International is live on Vincosport, running from 4pm to 9pm. – http://vinco.elasticbeanstalk.com/fixtures/12952-manchester-international
To be honest it doesn’t look a terribly good quality meeting.

Yes, especially now that heats seem to be routinely won in 4:05 and semis won in 4:02/4:03. That certainly found Dibaba out in London last year.
It will be interesting to see if Houlihan continues to improve or if she plateaus or if this year proves to be the best of her career (when she could run without pressure & expectation). Very little is…[Read more]

Yes, Adelle Tracey excepted, our 800m runners were poor. There were (minor) medals up for grabs there in both races. To not have even one Brit in the men’s final is unforgiveable (maybe too strong a word?)

The 800 can be a funny event though. If it goes out a second quicker or slower than your ideal first lap speed or if you get balked/blocked…[Read more]

Indeed Philipo. When I saw your Ennaoui pick I did think, “Is he mad?” Yes, she’s a very fine athlete and if it had been a much slower race maybe she could have prevailed. But, Laura obviously wanted to snuff out that possibility.

Regarding the Part 2 next time, I definitely think picking all 48 winners might put some people off. So, yes, perhaps…[Read more]

For the walks (in case anyone is interested!) …

    Men
20km: Relatively slow winning time. But the Europeans are pretty competitive at world level in an event that is hotly contested by competitors from several continents. Global titles not usually won by Europeans recently.
50km: Relatively slow time due to the 33/34 degree heat but European…[Read more]

    Yep.

Looking at less-headline-grabbing progress being made in some events …

A very good Women’s 400m. Take out the doped-up Russian performances and Swiety’s 50.41 & Belibasaki’s 50.45 stand up very well on the European list for the last 20 years. Also 50.77 for 3rd place. Overall, pretty deep by recent European standards.

    The Women’s 200…[Read more]

And the final scores are in!

Firstly, before the presentation of the medals, some Honorary Awards:

Top scorers in Part 1: Hayden (11) followed by Taffy (10).
Top scorers in Part 2: The only player to score more than 50% was MattRH17 (9). Laps & LuckySpikes both scored 8.
Best GB medalist pick: Undoubtedly this has to go to LadyLoz for Meghan…[Read more]

I agree. She actually ran that last 1000 in 2:36.28 (pretty even-paced) – that’s really shifting – 3:54.4 pace – and a smidgen faster than she ran the last 1000 when chasing Dibaba in the World Indoors earlier this year (remember that was a long kick from a 1000 out by Dibaba).
Not too shabby at all given that she may not be 100%.

    I do agree…[Read more]

Final standings and honorary awards (ooh!) will be posted sometime tomorrow now. I’m just too shattered tonight – the week has caught up with me!

Yes, me too! Thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts here.

    Yes, Courtney did well.

It was always going to be difficult for Rosie though. She’s stagnated after her PB earlier this season whilst the rest of Europe has been improving PBs and/or finding form.

Without even checking I can say this was the deepest ever set of European times in a women’s steeple – 4 under 9:25, 6 under 9:30 and 11 under 9:35.…[Read more]

Interesting to see that the Czech Republic are developing some good female distance runners – see Eva Vrabcova above in the marathon and in the 1500 final tonight they have 2 runners, Simona Vrzalova & Diana Mezulianikova, who’ve improved this year to 4:04 and 4:06 respectively.

Yep, if it was me it would’ve put me right off my race, but I guess keeping your focus is one of the things that separates champions from plodders like me.

Physically, maybe it didn’t affect her that much? It looked dramatic but perhaps it didn’t take as much out of her as we’d imagine.
