Agreed with much of what has been posted above, though a few thoughts to add –

    – In a sport that is increasingly competitive, that has seen a record-breaking spread of nations claiming medals – I don’t “expect” medals unless they’re from tried and tested super-humans with nerves of steel (Mo and Jess in the last 10 years, basically). That’s not…[Read more]

Is Jazmin Sawyers also in a position to benefit from any declined invitations?

By the way, I asked this question on the Flashback section three years ago (I don’t think anyone visits there anymore) and wondered if anyone had feedback for me?

I was reminiscing on YouTube by watching W800 Championship races from the 90s… I then watched the 1988 Olympic Final and saw a young Diane Modahl competing.

    I first followed a…[Read more]

I know that for many this is an “unsatisfying” event at the moment but I still avidly follow the progress of our athletes. Here’s the 2017 pre-World Championships update (all UK athletes to go sub-1:59) –

    1. Kelly Holmes 1:56.38 (3 x sub-1:57 + 6 x sub-1:58 + 19 x sub-1:59)
    2. Kirsty Wade 1:57.42 (4 x sub-1:58 + 2 x sub-1:59)
    3. Lynsey Sharp…[Read more]

I have to agree – Muir seems very much at an “all or nothing” point in her career (and maturity). This could result in an amazing win or a heartbroken 9th – part of this is why I’m so excited! Shades of Paula R and her track career, actually…

Watching Laura crash and burn in Rio (as painful as it felt) was infinitely more rewarding for me than…[Read more]

Well, it has been two years since the last update, so let’s take a look of the revised UK all-time list ahead of this year’s championships, shall we?

    1. Kelly Holmes 1:56.38 (3 x sub-1:57 + 6 x sub-1:58 + 19 x sub-1:59)
    2. Kirsty Wade 1:57.42 (4 x sub-1:58 + 2 x sub-1:59)

The W400 is a fascinating one – just suppose that Onoura and TBO both bomb at the Europeans while PSD runs a storming relay leg to snatch a medal (even Gold)? If she has bettered the times of both on the circuit before then, couldn’t she feasibly take the 3rd spot? That said, it is strange indeed that she has chosen not to do the individual (or…[Read more]

Agree with all of this; am actually pretty surprised that Bianca Williams hasn’t been given the chance to better her 4th place finish in 2014… she may not be in 2014 shape but she was still 4th at the trials, wasn’t she?

Rimmer needs to finish as Top Brit (not the nonsense I typed!)

  • replied to the topic ktfrog in the forum Current events 1 year, 3 months ago

Surprised to see slight negativity here – this vast squad gives a great opportunity for athletes to prove themselves and snatch third spots for Rio.

    MEN:

100m:James Ellington, Adam Gemili, Richard Kilty
Does this mean that CJ has already been awarded the 3rd spot? If Kilty somehow snatched the gold medal though!!!???

    200m:Danny Talbot,…[Read more]

Serious question – if all of the big players are present in the final, will it be a fast race or will they dawdle and burn up at the end? I don’t know enough about Genzebe’s 1500m style (World Record Aside) to predict her to go out hard…

We know what Weightman’s (and Cram’s for that matter) competitive spirit is like. We also know how crestfallen she looked when she realised how far she has fallen behind Muir in the early part of the season.

She won’t go down without a fight!

Exactly. I don’t dispute MRME’s statement in the slightest (I am decidedly NOT a biochemist).

However, as my favourite athlete (it was always a tie between Kelly and her until 2004, but Ms Holmes received just reward while Paula never quite got hers) I feel a little torn at the moment.

IF Paula has some unusual blood results from the late 00s…[Read more]

Larkim, thank you for reminding me of this. I don’t think that I’ll be dipping into the Let’s Run forums again!

  • replied to the topic ktfrog in the forum Current events 2 years, 2 months ago

Ok – after a thoroughly depressing half an hour reading venom on Let’s Run I have no further questions.

The ability of posters on there to invent ‘facts’ about races that are easily found online is unbelievable…

I thought I’d read on these boards that Okoro competed (very badly) at the trials and didn’t make the final. Or was this last year?

  • replied to the topic ktfrog in the forum Current events 2 years, 2 months ago

I’m a regular reader of these boards and I genuinely don’t know who you’re referring to – the athlete you mention earlier who presents herself as “the cleanest of the clean”? I can only think of one exceptionally vocal anti-drugs megastar and that’s the marathon runner. Is this who you’re alluding to?

A lot of speculation round these parts and…[Read more]

After spending nearly a month trying to watch the USA Trials Final (unsuccessfully) I’ve decided to resurrect this thread.

Despite Sum’s very fast clocking this year, depth in the event is weaker than I’ve ever seen it at this point in the season.

Almanza, Buchel and Kohlmann are not hugely well known to me? Are they potential medalists? Or were…[Read more]

One other thing – my main problem with this whole debacle is that on this very thread there are a lot of conflicting viewpoints, all from people who actively follow the sport. It is a complicated subject.

To reduce it to a basic headline and witch-hunt, with no real exploration of the global context is very annoying.
